I don't own any branded brushes, but have only got custom made ones. Anyone else do this or would you buy a brush just for a name and reputation?
As of now it depends on what you're paying as I've seen artisan brush prices jump, while branded brushes have decreased in price and overall quality has been improving. The only way I see a custom brush or artisan brush being a good buy now is if you want a larger knot, as larger knot brushes from branded manufacturers cost a small fortune.
I only own one artisan brush, but it's a great one. If you want a brush that's above average quality in terms of knot, but not the absolute best you can get, I think artisan brushes are a good deal. For entry level brushes, I don't think you can save money with artisan work. Also, the absolute best, money is no object, brushes are only available from the bigger names. But, I'm not willing to spend the money to find out just how good those brushes are.
