just wondering, anyone know of ways to "shorten" a brush's loft, or height? I have a synthetic that I like but feel its too "flimsy"

Remove the knot and deepen the hole in which is sits. Remount. This'll stiffen/shorten knot exposure.

The brush knot on the right is a PurTech synthetic I got from Virginia Sheng on theBay. It has too much backbone. I prefer the natural hairs. The one on the left I got from the same source. It is a silver tip badger, and I love it.

my pur-tech feels super soft,I had to dial in technique a bit, too get used to how soft it feels.

You can also place a O ring over the bristles near the handle. This will effectively shorten the loft allowing you to try it without a lot of effort.

this....I use to be a fireman and we had a saying; "try before you pry"...meaning, try to open the door before you go kicking it down or pulling it off its hinges...see if that "fixes" your issue before you go the more aggressive route

:signs011: I've used the o-ring method and it will work. You may need to use more than one o-ring. :)
