a shot in the dark, I know, but....
does anyone have a recovery CD for a Dell Inspiron e1405? I've a friend at church who has a cousin needing one, and the easiest thing for them would be to use the factory recovery disk to reinstall everything.
    Thanks

I agree with you 99%....you do have to recognize that in the old days, the real install discs could be copied and installed willy-nilly anywhere, so I understand the change, I just hate it
all those that ever copied those installs discs should have every copy they made rammed up their as....HEY!!! that hurt!!!!

Rephrase....all those that made copies for ILLEGAL AND NEFARIOUS PURPOSES should have the discs rammed up their arse (ahh, that's better)

In the old days you couldn't just download the install disc from the internet ;)

Every machine gets its own serial code when you buy a PC with preinstalled Windows - so what's the need for special recovery cds that only work with that specific machine? Logically you should be able to use _any_ (OEM) Windows-CD of that edition (i.e. XP Home) to do a fresh install with your machine's serial code. But this doesn't always work as the big manufacturers have license codes that are not compatible with "normal" installation discs.

FYI, you can call and order a factory CD for FREE since they no longer include one by default.

All you need is to call them with the service tag from the bottom of the machine.

There's a web place to do it as well, but I cannot seem to find the link. I did this about 5 months ago for machines that were 1 and 2 years old without issue.

    Cheers.

Obviously, it is MS as much as the manufacturers that are responsible for this recovery disk/partition situation that so many people are finding themselves in. Isn't this what WGA is for, to verify that software isn't pirated? It is my understanding that Vista recovery disks usually cost between $30 and $40. And if you have certain models of Sony (and maybe others) your machine will only allow you to make one set of recovery disks. What's that all about besides making money? It's bad enough that their products are flaky. :sick007
