Since moving to st helens I have had to change my barbers, there is one just aronud the corner very modern, I went there today but it was just too busy (Ive been trying to get in there the last few days but its been too busy) And then I remembered there was and old style barbers in the town center. when I was in there it was the same old guy I remember from when I was at school (nearly 30 years ago!!) Keith is the guys name I got a great hair cut and even used a Puma straight on the back and sides. The above pics are from his display cabinets sweet looking Gillette, I popped back in there an hour ago and gave him a Schick injector in case for his display. I dont think the inside of the sore had changed since I was last in there.
I've really been kicking around the idea of getting my barber's license and cutting hair old school on the weekends. The wife is too. If I do, I'll set up a display case and showcase the right way to shave. Also, sell some creams, soaps, AS, blades, etc, you know, our stuff. We are going to be moving so it'll be a year, maybe even in retirement, but I'm seriously looking into it. A little husband and wife shop, ya know. Anyway, that shop rocks!
Last year I was walking a round the neighborhood where my daughter was going to school - it was the neighborhood where I grew up and it was interesting to see what had and had not changed in the almost 50 years since I lived there. One of the things that hadn't changed all that much was the barbershop. And the new people had a bunch of the old stuff from the shop on display. Even the chairs were the same, good old KOKEN chairs locally made.
Howdy! It's great to know that as time passes some things tend to stay much the same such as the barber shop supplies and set up. Fond memories surface every time I see an old fashioned barber shop. Always, Gene
I love stumbling across old barber shops like that. The barber I go to now is a veteran of the Iraq War, so he knows everything about giving military cuts. He's also the only one I know of that gives straight razor shaves. It's kind of a mix of old school and modern. Since I get a military discount, I've been kicking around the idea of getting a straight razor shave from him since the haircut and shave package is $30. I just have to remember to schedule an appointment.
My barber shop is a snapshot right out to the old days. The shop was passed down the current owner, Jennifer, from her dad. It's tiny. Has no phone. Everything is vintage. It's pretty well worn in with an awesome patina. Old tools, chairs, signage, register, table top radio. No iPhone dock or wifi. Unfortunately, Jennifer doesn't to shaves. Hmmm... Maybe there is a business opportunity there..
There was no till in the barbers shop, just an old wooden draw.lol Even the electric wiring look old (vintage plugs and sockets) with the same white tiles on the wall, and same barbers chairs.
Howdy! I guess it depends on the state; however, in Texas only a barber can do shaves, if memory serves me right. I remember back in the early 1980's I was going to a hair cut/stylist shop and that's what they told me back then. Rules are subject to change over time; however. Always, Gene
