I lather in a bowl... I do not like blooming my soaps in the tubs they come in. So I take a 'snurdle' of soap and smear it in the bottom of my lather bowl and yes, you can do this with Tabac too, and then I bloom the 'snurdle' of soap in my bowl and whip up a lather in it as well. Keeping the main tub of soap nice and dry. Is this necessary... no. But much like other things I enjoy doing; I enjoy the process.
I use mugs to hold soaps and load the brush, but I make my lather straight to the face. Cold water, too.
I have a Chinese rice bowl that I mashed a puck of soap into; whip up lather in it and apply to face. The bottom of the bowl has a nice reverse flare that's easy to hold.
When I started, I started with a bowl, because that is what my VDH kit came with. Then I moved to a scuttle, because the lather was warm. Now I face lather, because that is where the brush belongs.
Started with a blue & green VDH bowl. Gathered several Old Spice mugs. Then I discovered the incorrect use of a suribachi bowl; Japanese seed & spice grinding dish. About the same depth as the other two types, but the open shape allows for more action and the textured bottom helps for fast air inclusion.
Well, it is vintage style shaving, why not vintage shaving threads? I use a handmade thing that sort of looks like a sugar bowl/crock, I lather on top of my soap, just like my old man did.
I use Arko sticks so they are stored in a drawer as they come wrapped from the factory. Then I take one stick at a time, cut it into bite sized pieces which are them mashed into my soap bowl a Ziploc storage container. I make my lather in a SS bowl I got off ebay, so when I drop it there is no lather bowl breakage. The bowl is the same dimensions as the Van der Hagan ceramic bowl.
I love these 10 year old thread's, many show how far the TWS community has come. If you look at the old SOTD threads you'll see a lot of big corporate soaps, this of course was before the artisan soap rush, which is a great thing Just my observation.
