Just like the title says, I'm making a Bay rum after shave, and would like to make some Old Spice after shave along the old Shulton scent.

I can't make out the scents they have in Old Spice.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    (SHORT VERSION)

I'd really love to make a vintage Old Spice clone using this list of ingredients, orange, lemon, spices, clary sage, aldehydes, cinnamon, carnation, geranium, jasmine, heliotrope, pimento berry, vanilla, musk, cedar wood, frankincense, benzoin, tonka bean, ambergris, perhaps eliminating the artificial. Bottoni seemed to be the guy to ask but he isn't around. Does any have his recipe or one like it?

Thanks for all the help, I can make a after shave similar to the Old Spice my Dad use to get. Like some one mentioned in one of the links above You'll need a expensive lab and lab tech's to figure out the original Shulton formula.

Good luck. This has been talked about, and attempted for a long while. The problem is, what concentrations of each ingredient do you use? If you figure it out, I volunteer to be one of the first to try and compare it to my vintage Shulton Old Spice.

It's been over 20 years since I smelled the old Shulton Old Spice.

    Top Notes (5% to 20%):
    Orange
    Lemon
    Anise
    Clary Sage

    Middle Notes (50% to 80%):
    Cinnamon
    Geranium
    Jasmine
    Pimento Berry

    Base Notes (5% to 20%):
    Vanilla
    Cedarwood
    Frankincense
    Benzoin

This is a good start to the amounts of the ingredients, the only thing I have of the above is the lemon, cinnamon, and vanilla. probably take a month to get the rest.

I'll probably use rum for the base alcohol, and some witch hazel.

    Don't forget the whale puke(Ambergris).

I almost forgot the most important ingredient: Welcome to The Shave Den!!! Please go to the "Welcome Center" , introduce yourself, and enjoy the forum.

Don't think I can get the Ambergris these days!

Edit: Just checked Amazon, I can get some Ambergris oil for under $10.00 for a small bottle.

I wonder if that's the same as whale puke stuff?

Edit 2: Did some research, the oil is not the real ambergris!!!

EBay. But, it's a little pricey. Around $100 a gram.

After spending so much money on just the essential oils, it'd be better to just buy it from India, it's the closest any one will get on the original formula.

Nope. Barrister and Mann nailed it to a T. Their Reserve "Spice" is their copy of the old Shulton Old Spice.
    https://www.barristersreserve.com/products/barristers-reserve-spice-aftershave-splash

Their other reserve AS's are just as spectacular. 'Classic' and 'Cool.' Classic is a copy of Gillette Sun Up, and Cool is Floid Blue.

In the future they are going to come out with 'Fern' (the old Houbigant Fougere Royal) and 'Lavender' (Caldey Island Lavender), both of which were available for preview at last year's Seattle Shave Convention.
