It arrived last week, an Edwin Jagger DE, EJ89BL. This gave the best shave yet I have had with a DE. I used Astra blades which I have never tried before. Does anyone like the Astras and the EJ?
Just ask Bob aka battlemunky, he'd have a thing or two to say about the EJ and the Astra SP's.:happy102
never tried those..but have some derbys i loaded up this morning..ive been happy w/ the 7'oclocks..thus far
Muhle and Astra DE razors and Astra's are a nice, smooth, safe shave for me. Once you feel comfortable with the Astra, try a Feather blade....very very smooth.
I hated my Astra Superior Stainless, then I decided to toss them in my Parker 96R and they worked just fine. :happy102 As for the EJ, Kai and Super Iridium work the best for me, Rapira's are a close 3rd.
Astra SP is a very good fit in my EJ DE86. In this razor I also like Voskhods, Supermax Stainless, Feathers, and 7OC Yellows.
Astras are great blades for me in about any razor I use them in. The EJ89L is a razor I only recently purchased. It does very well; however, it isn't my top choice.
I used astra's in my EJ for a while, good blades. Since then I have become a feather man, dont think I will use much else now.
OK, I have to know something...is this thing slippery? The idea of a handle without any kind of crosshatched or knurled pattern in a wet soapy environment seems counter-intuitive to say the least. But, this thing gets amazing reviews and high marks across the board. Can you DE89BL owners clear this up for me? Is this thing hard to handle? Should I drop the extra $15-20 and get the new barley chrome model? I love the idea of getting a sweet modern DE razor for under $30, so I'm really leaning toward the 89BL, but not if it's going to be hard to hold on to. Help?
Although I don't have an EJ, I do have a Merkur Futur with the chrome finish. As long as I keep the soap off my hands, doesn't matter how wet they get, I have no issues with slipperyness. Ever slide your wet fingers across a wet plate? You get a squeak. Why? Friction - no slip, as long as there is no soap.
i have the de89l. i have no issues w/ the handle slipping in my hand.if i do get some lather on my hands i rinse them before picking up the razor though
Currently, the best combination for me are : Lord LP1922L with Astra SP EJ DE89BA11 (DE89L) with Feather
I can't believe I missed this earlier. As WilliamsWarrior mentioned, I do have something to say about this exact topic I put an Astra in my 89 as the first blade ever init once I got it and 16 2+ pass shaves latr it was finally uncomfortable. My previous ecord was 9 days on a Feather in my Slim Adjustable. It got to the point with the 89/Astra setup that I was getting bored. I'm used to getting 3-5 shaves out of a blade and this was ludicrous. If you are into getting max bang for your buck, a setup that can deliver longevity such as that paired with such an inexpensive and high quality razor is the way to go. I haven't tried another stra since but plan to after the themed weeks and an upcoming review I'm planning are complete. The 89 is probably my favorite razor, FWIW. Maybe my slant too....not sure.
