Ive got the long handle version of the Merkur. Its a great razor. I cant compare it to the EJ but I can tell you that my Merkur is great. If I hadnt picked up a '59 Gillette Fatboy, Id still be using but I dont foresee myself ever getting rid of the Merkur.

Merkur 34c is more aggressive, but both are outstanding shavers, and the most affordable. They will last a lifetime. Enjoy

None of them are "aggressive". Merkur HD has a little more bite, but nothing that can really make a difference. For me, these two specific razors simply do not work. Unless you have very small, soft, stubble, they might not work great for you either. Don't but in the whole "beginner razor" thing. I did and I regretted it.

I have 3 HDs, and consistently get my best shaves from them over my 28 other DEs.
That said, I've never tried an EJ.

I have both of them and they're both fine razors. I mostly use vintage razors now, but both the Merkur and Edwin Jagger are in the rotation.

I find I get better shaves out of the EJ, but ever so slightly.

34c has a slight edge, but both are great!

I think both razors shave equally well, but the Edwin Jagger (being a 3 piece razor) has the option of switching handles. The Merkur 34C does not offer that option.

The Merkur has a slight advantage for me, in that it has a very cool, retro 1950s industrial art look to it -- the EJ is more polished and sophisticated looking IMO.

I doubt very much that I'd be able to tell them apart by the feel of shaving with them, and they both cost about the same, so the looks are really the main factor in choosing between the two. I feel fortunate to have both -- I recommend the same for all fans of traditional wet shaving.

Both are a staple in the den but I find the 34C to be a bit more comfortable.

With the right blade combination, either choice renders a smoother, closer shave than the more expensive tools in the lineup - Your mileage may vary......

I also own both, I got the 34C first. For me both razors delivered a smooth, close albeit pretty similar shave. I found however I also like the shorter handle of the Merkur, that said, one of the BIG advantages of a 3 piece over a 2 piece is the ability to change handles. I used the EJ for quite a while until I tried a Weber DLC with the BullDog handle in SS. I would then swap heads(Weber/EJ) using the BullDog handle. To me the Weber and EJ heads also gave a similar shave, but I enjoyed the better materials of the Weber.
My current favorite razor, for the last few years, is a vintage "Stahly Live Blade" shave head mated to a Weber BullDog handle. This combination gives me a close, smooth, absolutely irritation free shave everytime! I like the shave so much I bought several Stahly Live Blade razors just to get the shave heads.:)

    alpla444 That's sweet!

I have and like the Edwin jagger,
I did own the 34c but that was my first DE razor (I have since sold it), so maybe my technique was not as good as when I got EJ89l but both are good, i did like the longer handle on the EJ.

I have usedboth and found the Edwin Jagger DE89L to work slightly better than the Merkur 34C. The EJ gave me shaves that were a little close and with marginally less irritation. Both are top-notch razors in my experience, and at a reasonable price. At least they were when I bought them (both were $35). The EJ sat unused for many years, so I eventually gave it away.

I have the EJ ED89 with extra grip handle and the Merkur 34c, I find them about the same, on the mild side, depending what blade you use. I would not recommend them for heavy beard but for the average beard they're good razors. Personally I prefer the 3 piece EJ because of the longer handle with a WS or an Astra SP blade.

I have both........Merkur is slightly more agressive. I find I like the grip & length of the Merkur better, (EJ seems slippery to me) ... 2 piece design is a plus over the EJ...... I like the shave from the EJ but I'll take the Merkur over the EJ every time.
