Ever bid on something just because it is cool?

You are pretty sure it will go much higher than your budget. But, you bid on it anyway because it is an exceptional item and you can participate. Makes you feel you are a part of things. Like a model brass train engine (or razor) you know will be $$$ and you start it at $50.

And sometimes, rarely, you are surprised and that super-deluxe shiny thingummy actually goes to you. It happens.

I once bid $12 on a lot of 4 straight razors, because there was no way they wouldn't sell for more than that. I am now the proud owner of those four razors.

I've bid on razors not really wanting them and hoping I'd be out bid.

I have bid on stuff that looked cool and that I didn't need or really want, lucky for me the only auctions I won were at a very low price with poor old me being out bid on most of them :)

You really don't want to see it, it makes me cringe when I think about all the bad buys I've made.

I make a habit of dropping the first bid just so that sellers don't get enticed by sly buyers to end the auction and sell them the item privately. Im thinkinng if its got a bid on it that wont happen.....
I do bid on lots of items I have no hope in winning just on the off chance no one is sniping and it gets forgotten. I havent won any this way, but I can hope.

I have bid lowball wanna be player offers thinking I would loose. That's how I got my rolls for $14. I got 6 straight razor blades for $15 the same way.

Years ago I used to speculate on gold and silver bullion. I'd throw out lowball bids on Ebay all the time, not expecting anything to come of it, but just to have fun with the process and also kind of monitor what prices were going for with different types. A couple of times my bids all won at once, and while I was happy to get bullion well under market value, I'd also be kind of screwed trying to cover the bids that I didn't expect to win!
