So, last night I was going to try out my newly acquired puck of Col. Conk's Bay Rum with my Fat Boy (which has only been used up to #3 so far) and started feeling adventurous. I decided to crank that puppy all the way up to 9!! GASP!! Turned out to be my best DE shave so far. I nicked myself around the jawline (always a difficult area for me) but I achieved BBS with only two passes -- first WTG and second ATG. Just had to remember to be patient and concentrate on my blade angle. Smoothest shave I've yet had. I was absolutely ecstatic. The Fat Boy is definitely my favorite razor now. Couldn't beat the results. Afterwards, I splashed on some AV and then sat on the porch with my new friend Capt. Black White. Made for the perfect evening!
Heck Yes! Slam The FatBoy To Nine! I Am Finding Myself To Be In The "Aggressive Is Better" Camp... Nine Is My Favorite Number By The Way...
I'm normally more of the 4-5 range type of guy, but for some reason a Fatboy on 9 matches really well with a feather blade. I also can't tell the differance between 7, 8, and 9. Once I get to 7, the safety bar is irrelevant.
I started with my Fat Boy on 1 and in successive shaves worked it up to 7 which seemed just fine. Did the same with my super adjustable but 7 did not give me a good shave so took it down to 5 again which works fine. Using 7 for the first pass on the strongest growth. Of course it all depends on what blade you are using, how old it is, the nature of your lather, how long you have soaked your stubble for etc etc. And obviously no two people are the same.
When I use my Slim with Rapira blades I like the #9 setting...Which I don't understand as with ChemEric's Feathers, the Rapiras are very sharp, granted not Feather sharp but at least Astra sharp, YMMV, yet I do get great results with them @9...
per you guys advice I tried my super adjustable with a shark at 9. No cuts! only did two passes because I was in a hurry but it still came out pretty smooth. I am definitely going to play around with this some more.
If you really want a quick shave, try a slant with a Feather blade. Not for everyone. A slant with any good, sharp blade makes quick work of stubble. I use my 69 Super Adjustable set on 6 with Derby blades and it works as well as my Gem 1912 and Junior with a Pella or Treet carbon blade. Almost as quick as a slant with a Kai or Feather. I like my 55 (IIRC) Red Tip with a Derby or Shark. The good thing about an aggressive razor is that you can use less pressure and fewer passes to get a close shave. How are you liking that Captain Black White? How does it compare to the Capt. Black Gold? I recently picked up a pack of the White but haven't tried it out yet.
I seem to remember a thread somewhere that talked about over-clocking a Gillette Adjustable...IIRC...you have to actually break the razor though.
I am being very popular beginner I have a feather (not for long), and use iridium blade super, and the work is very good! I have stocks of red personn to try and wait for my new razor to try to be like!
