Since getting my Fatboy I've discovered that there is a learning curve to mastering it. The blade angle is certainly different from that of my Merkur 34c, and the extra weight means I have to be much more careful not to apply too much pressure. I find using an Astra Superior Platinum on Setting 3 for my first pass and on Setting 4 for the second, using my Merkur for the third pass and touch ups, works best for me.

indeed there is a learning curve... I just smack it on 9 and do 3 passes in less than 5 min.... The Fatboy is such a gentle and forgiving razor but the British Aristocrats OC and SB are very aggressive and not so forging

I have a medium coarse beard and find that a setting of 5 works just fine. Usually two passes and I have a socially acceptable shave. Below is today's shave.
