    Greetings Gents,

I'm planning to buy a Feather safety razor, but I'm confused about these two models: the AS-D2S (All stainless):

    Dimensions:

    Razor Length: 98mm/3.9"
    Razor Head Length: 43mm/1.7"
    Razor Head Width: 25mm/1"
    Product Weight (lbs) 0.55 = 99 grams

    vs the WS-D2S (Wood handle):

    Dimensions:

    Razor Length: 108mm/4.2"
    Razor Head Length: 43mm/1.7"
    Razor Head Width: 25mm/1"
    Product Weight (lbs): 0.15 = 70 grams

According to what I've ended up in my research about these two razors, I can say in short that the all stainless is a bit shorter, heavier and has grains all over the handle, while the wood version is a bit longer, lighter and has a smooth wood finish in the middle of the handle.

Now my question, according to the specifications above, which razor should give me a closer shave? and which one I should buy?

Please if anyone tried them both, let me know or write your recommendation below if anyone of you has at least tried one of them.

    Cheers.

The head on both of these razors is the same, the only difference is the handle. Which do you like better ? The Feather is known to be a very mild razor so the closeness of your shave is really going to depend on your technique and how well you can keep the angle in the sweet spot.

Thanx for your reply bro, I have a really heavy and thick beard, so in short, I need the very best. Name me the most aggressive razor that gives the closest shave, should I go for Parker or Merkur or what?

In all honesty any razor is capable of giving you a close smooth shave regardless of your beard type. 95% of your result will be a direct reflection of your technique, 5% will be the gear that you choose to use. Pick any razor, blade , soap and brush and use that set exclusively for a month and you will be getting great shaves.

Indeed. My youngest son who has a 5 o'clock shadow at noon, gets it from his mom ;) love that $10 Futur clone.

If you look at a Gillette New OC ... it give you all the aggression and closeness you desire.

Which one is more aggressive? the wood version or stainless steel? what about Merkur Futur or Muhle R41?

Of the four listed, I only have experience with a clone of the Merkur Futur. I've found the Ming Shi 2000S set at 4.5 / 6 is plenty aggressive for my needs. My benchmark shave is with a 1959 Gillette 195, the Fat Boy, on max setting of 9. Preferred blade being a Feather Hi Stainless. For the price, the Chinese Futur Clone gives great service.

If you are hoping for the more aggressive feel between the two handles with the same head, choose the stainless steel. It will be heavier, might require developing a lighter touch with less pressure to achieve the same result as the wood handle.

If you are referring to the Feather AS-D2, like Andrew said, they are the exact same head. You want aggressive, consider the Mühle R41. You want really aggressive? Search out the 2011 Mühle R41.
Better yet, get Fuzzy to show you how to make one of his pain sticks. ;)

As has been stated, identical heads will pretty much give you the same shave. The steel handled one will be a little heavier and will probably have a slightly different balance point but any differences in the shave you get will be minuscule. Pick the one that looks and feels best to you.

I think that the blade is much more important than the razor. Given a nice sharp blade like a Feather or a Gillette Sliver Blue I can get just as good a shave with a very mild Gillette Blue Tip as I can with a Fatboy Adjustable on 9. And although I've been wet shaving for over 50 years I don't think I'm any sort of expert when it comes to technique, I just subconsciously adjust to the blade gap as I shave. All a more aggressive razor with a more exposed blade does for me is make it more likely that I'll nick an earlobe or nostril. Having said that I almost never cut myself or get weepers.

I could refer you to few options:
    1. Rockwell 6S adjustable all stainless
    2. Karve adjustable all brass
    3. Rex Ambassador adjustable all stainless

    4. Slim/Fatboy Gillette adjustable all brass, the most affordable option

I used to have the AS/D2 and I found it very similar to a Gillette Tech. I would suggest trying a tech before spending your money on the Feather. They are not exactly the same, but close enough that you would either like both or not like either. You should be able to get a user grade tech fairly cheap and if you don't like it, you're only out $20 or so instead of $200.

I have both too. I can't say they are that similar.

The vintage Techs have been around for long enough either of y'alls might be dinged, out of alignment, or some such issues. There's also that big asterisk *YOMV.

Between you two guys @ugadawg & @Primotenore - what year are your Techs?
