I'm thinking of trying some new blades and feather was going to be my next choice, but kinda worried because all i have read about how sharp they are compared to others (or at least that's what I have read). Is this true? Right now I have been using Merkur Blades.
I find them quite sharp but most excellent. Just picked up 100 Feathers on line. I have been using Sharks up until I procured the Feathers. If you never tried Sharks I will PIF you some of them as well as some of the Feathers. Send me your contact info and I will shoot them out to you.
Feathers are very sharp. But they are the best for people with sensitive skin (IMO). I just don't use them very often because they last 2-3 shaves for me and I don't get consistent shaves from them. Other than that I think they are great and I always have been pack or two on hand.
what razor are you using? My first DE shave was with Feather blades, but my razor was extremely mild. Those early shaves, even with Feather blades, left stubble on my face. So the razor you use is as important as the blade. Feathers are nothing to be afraid of. They are significantly sharper than Merkurs- be gentle with you first shave, but don't be scared.
I try to use one blade per shave. Feather is a bit expensive for that. (Doing that is just my preference.)
Feathers are good blades. You never know if you will like them or not if you don't try them. What other blades have you used?
I would definitely give them a try. It took me about a year to develop my technique enough to comfortably use them on a regular basis. I would buy a tuck or two and give them a shot. If they work well, buy more and keep at it. If not, put them in a drawer and revisit them in a couple months. At first I hated them, but after a while they are nice sharp blades that get the most out of the new R41.
I have feathers and use them on occasion however it's a love/hate relationship with me. Some days they work absolutely amazing, others my face feels like I shaved with a ceiling fan that had straight razors taped to the blades. The wife loves them, so I buy them for her and swipe the plastic container for travel purposes
Sharp? Heck, all razor blades are sharp. That's why we buy them. They will all cut you if you don't take your time and respect the blade. I don't go in for calling a blade "forgiving" or "aggressive". As I said, they all cut and all will bite you if you don't pay attention. Use the Feather just like any and all other blades and you won't have a problem. Unless, of course, you habitually hack the daylights out of your face no matter what blade you use.
I use feathers and in certain razors they are fantastic. I get great results in my Merkur Slant and any Gillette TTO, to name a few.
Feathers work great in Feathers. I just shaved with a Feather Popular razor for the last two days and used a Feather Hi-Stainless that comes with the razor and got a fantastic and smooth shave. I had been using Feather NEW Hi-Stainless Platinum coated blades in my Merkurs and did okay, but could nick or burn myself too easily. I'm guessing the NEWs would work well in the Feather Popular as well.
Well looks like Ill just have to give them a try, about to make an order from IB, so Ill add a 10 packer to the basket. Ill give a follow up once I get them. Thanks for the info guys.
Me, I have tried both the Merkur and Feather blades. I like the Merkur better. But everbody is different. The Feather are super sharp blades!
I had settled on Feathers in my Techs and Krona and Wally Wilkies in GoodWill and Parker 72R. Got in on the Voskohd buy and now I have one I can use in all my DEs and still have a hundred each of the Feathers and Wilkies. And the Feathers are still far best in the Krona. I really do like the Feathers and I get 4 or 5 DFS from each.
I'm sure someone does, but I'm not sure it would be helpful. Here's two reasons why: 1. the razor you use is where your aggressiveness comes from. The amount of blade exposure between the bar/ comb and the cap of the razor determines aggressiveness. Each razor also bends the blade to a different degree, which also affects aggressiveness. 2. that said, there's also the interaction between your face (skin, hair type, beard growth pattern, etc...) and the razor. A razor- blade pairing that works for you might not work for someone else. So what's aggressive for me might not be enough for you. Or it might be too much. What might help is a list that groups similar blades together. Ex: Astra blades, Shark Platinum blades, and Treet Platinum blades perform similarly in my razor.
There's a pretty good thread on Shave My Face with microscope pics of the blades. I can't remember the title off the top of my head, but it is very informative.
