Greetings from a noob: I found the thread on the Feather Portable and wondered if anyone could tell me how it compares to a Merkur Classic and EJ89. I LOVE my EJ, but do not want to take it along when I travel. I recent bought the Feather Popular for $18+shipping and was astounded to read about the all metal Feather Portable for a fraction of the price! So, I am willing to check out the FP. Does anyone know of the best, reliable, and least expensive on-line source for the Feather Portable?? :happy005 Thanks.
Going from memory here, i believe a fellow member named Pauldog has supplied many with this razor. You may try a PM to him.
I believe that's the best route. He does have ebay and Amazon stores, but he gives better deals to forum members.
Welcome to TSD! This is the best wet shave board on the planet. I got my FP from Pauldog awhile back. It is a great shaver.
I have two feather portable razors and cannot say enough good about them. They are like a tech, with a little more bite. The handle is petite, but works well for travel. I have one on a Bull Mastiff handle as my manual dexterity is lacking. Paired with a Red Pack Israeli, I consistently get a nice high quality shave. It may only be an $10 razor, but it performs well above its price point. Like all things, YMMV. I picked mine up from http://www.bestclippers.com/fepora.html
I use my Feather Portable quite often, it's a an excellent razor and a steal for the money they sell for.
Just looked up a Feather Portable and I must say, it looks a little weird to me with the small handle and big head. That being said it seems like a very useful and compact razor. I may have to pick one up.
I have a Fat Tech handle that I got from Panchango / Dale that I slapped on my FP. The FP is a great shaver with or without the fattie handle.
The Feather Portable is a nice little shaver on the aggressive end of mild (moderately aggressive). As for a comparison, this might help a little...From the B&B ShaveWiki Aggressiveness Rankings (based on blade gap) from mild to less mild with razors in red as reference points: Gillette Tech = 0.56mm = 0.022inch Merkur Classic = 0.56mm = 0.022inch Feather Popular = 0.61mm = 0.024inch Gillette Super Speed Red Tip (US) = 0.66mm = 0.026inch Merkur HD (34C) = .071mm = 0.028inch Edwin Jagger DE89L = 0.76mm = 0.030inch Feather Portable = 0.79mm = 0.031inch Gillette Adjustable @ 5 = 0.81mm = 0.032inch
All I saw was the blade gap chart. That line was added when you edited the post after my reply. Unfortunately, I think too much is made out of aggressiveness of a razor. With a good blade choice and proper technique, most any razor can provide a nice BBS shave.
Okay then, your reply must have been while I was still jumping back and forth gathering information and constructing the post...my feelers weren't hurt too bad (though that was pretty much my welcome to Shave Den). You are very right, of course...proper technique/good blade choice are always more important than aggressiveness. Still, leaving it at "any razor+proper technique+good blade choice=BBS shave" won't answer the original question requesting an actual comparison between razors. When trying to compare & contrast razors it's nice to have some of the basic technical information on the physical differences between them that may lead to shaving differences...esp if one is still developing proper technique (ie: "Greetings from a noob:"). I hope my post helped answer that part of the original question in some small way.
Great razor. I got all of mine from Pauldog. I lost one in Afghan.......and recently replaced it with 2 others. Definately a must have!!!
Get a FP while you can, before they are all gone because they are not made anymore! I am getting a few more because they are that good!
I'm running out of Portables, and I moved all my sales to eBay. That way, I won't sell the last one somewhere else and face the possibility of cancelling someone's purchase there, and face negative feedback. (Yes, eBay allows buyers to post business-destroying negative feedback even for a transaction that both parties mutually agree to cancel. This happened to me!)
