Hello, and thanks in aadvance for any and all help i hope to recieve. I am 38 yrs old and until recently have always used a beard and mustache trimmer to shave. I have always gotten terrible razor burn and ingrown hairs if I used any type of disposable or cartridge razor. The ingrown hair problem has pretty much gone away now, but still when I shave wtih a razor, ( I started using a 3 blade sensitive skin model and sensitive skin cream and post shave lotion ) I will still end up with irritaiton. It doesnt start until the next morning, just a little itch then by 3 day past total dig my nails into my neck itch. I have been reading and watching the net. I just ordered a Merkur and a sample pack of blades. I also about a month ago picked up The Art of Shaving sampler. It worked better for me than anything I have ever tried. I guess to get to the point. What do you guys recommend for a newbie as far as pre, post, and after shaving. I have seen hunderds of products for this and have no idea where to start. I figure if The Art of Shaving works Ok for me, then there should be something alot better out there for my skin type. Also this entire website is great! Once again thank you guys for any help.
Welcome to The Shave Den! I am also a fan of the AOS products, although they are a bit pricey. For some great soaps and creams our own TSD store has some great stuff. I use both the soaps and the wheat cream and they are fantastic.
Personally I keep things sort of minimal. A few drops plain ol' Olive oil makes a good preshave and I hit the face with cold water as an after.. and welcome to the TSD!.
...to The Shave Den family! Be sure to stop by The Shave Den "Master Sticky" thread to familiarize yourself with the rules and different areas of The Shave Den!
Hi, to The Den! Recently I started to use plain & simple oil as preshave. I started with olive oil and sesame oil last week and I tried rice bran oil today. It is really nice! As post shave I am used to a hot & cold water splash (oh yeah, and sometimes Witch Hazel, which is nice as well ). But in the end you'll have to try yourself: what works for me might not work for you (and vice-versa). In the meantime: happy shaving!
AoS is very good stuff but pricey. PreShave: clean the area Shave: face lather and let lather sit for a couple of minutes before first pass; shave; rinse; repeat without needing to let the lather sit - just lather and go PostShave: rinse clean with warm water; cold water splash; aftershave splash This is what works for me. I hope we can be of help in guiding you to find what is best for you. It's great to have you here at 'da Den!
Welcome to the Den! Enjoy your stay here and Happy Shaving! I have found that after-shave milks work really well, but that is for me. They are not greasy and clog the pores on my legs; instead they provide the right amount of moisture and post-shave feel good. The store here at TSD offers many flavors. My husband has a myriad of products that he uses post shave but the items that are included with every shave: a cold water rinse and a moisturizing product, he has been using my Hemp Pomegranate Mango lotion lately and then his cologne of choice (but he doesn't necessarily apply that to his face). Keep experimenting and as Jody provided, check out the link. Good luck and good fortune in your shaving adventures!
Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
Welcome!! I'd say first thing is go to YouTube and watch some videos. On proper lathering pre/post shave and technique. They are an invaluable tool to use as a reference point. I enjoy the AoS products as well an their pre shave lasts me quite awhile and I like it. I always recommend a shower before shaving to soften everything up. The great (maybe) thing about wet shaving is there is always something else you can buy if there is anything that you don't find to be perfect. Razors creams soaps balms blades, de se straights there are so many great possibilities in store ahead! But ask whatever questions you have, the people on here are a wonderful resource as well.
Welcome aboard! As everyone has said, you will have to do a bit of experimenting, to find products and methods that work best for you. My one bit of advice is to change just one thing at a time. For instance, if you try a new soap, use the same razor & blades you have been using.
Thanks everyone for the quick and helpful replies. I have been watching the you tube videos and they too are very helpful. My razor will be here Saturday and I am like a kid waiting for Christmas. I had no idea of the amount of products out there. For now I am going to stick with one product until I figure out how to properly lather, shave, and condition. I'm sure there will be bumps in the road ahead.
