Remember that song by Boy George, COMMA COMMA COMMA COMMA COMMA CHAME-LION. Course that's what I thought the thing was called....how was I supposed to know person was from England? Or maybe from the Northeast U.S., with that accent?
Here's a question...we seem to be "changing" the pronunciation of the word "often" from "offen to "offTEN". ". I don't know why, frankly, but I'm going to keep with what I was taught as a little boy-"offen". How about changing "process" to "prOHcess" and "progress to "prOHgress" if we're into this changing mode?
Here's your Langwidge Lesson-I'm not sure about a comma following the word "family". I would say "my family and my friends do also".
My wife has B.A. and M.A. degrees in English, has been the managing editor for a publishing company, written, I believe, 15 non-fiction books (not self published), and currently has her own editing business, specializing in APA style dissertations from doctoral students. She would emphatically agree with you! One of her pet peeves are advertisements from a large law firm based in Birmingham, Alabama. After each commercial, he says “Call me Alabama,” with the words displayed with a phone number. Commas annd punctuation in general are important!
That is a joke among those who pay attention to this commercial. Sometimes I fat finger a post or text, but that’s a far cry from perpetually making the same mistake in TV commercials. Perhaps it is a joke within the firm and they now intentionally do it, or they’re too embarrassed to make a noticeable change.
