I work with a police officer. Yesterday we were chatting about how we save money cutting our own hair. He added that it helps him to afford the Fusion carts he buys. I said, "How'd you like to save even more money and get just as good a shave?" He was dubious but interested. Today I gave him a 1966 flair tip and a pack of Big Bens. He'd only seen a TTO as a kid, so I have him a quick demo on the proper angle, go slow and no pressure. He's got to be clean shaven so he'll get back to me in a few days either way. He's also a black gentleman but does not appear to have the common ingrown issue, if DE makes any difference with that. Anyway, we'll see. If he likes it I think I'll give him one of my long handle Black Beauties (he's 6'3 so it'll probably fit his hand a little better).
I think "frugal" is the word. So am I, except when it comes to razors, brushes, creams, pipes, whisky, and a few other things.
A few months back I gave a friend a Gillette Red Tip and some Astra SP blades. It was the first safety razor he has ever seen. He loves it; had me order a pack of 100 Astras.
I gave one friend a '57 Super Speed and the works. He used it for about a year and then grew a beard because he got a job where he doesn't have to shave. Just my luck.
And when he get hooked up, he will develop RAD, SAD, BAD etc.... and the saving he was supposed to achieve gone. .
It is a real treat to convert good friends and co workers to DE shaving. I've had the pleasure of converting a few myself. Nothing fancy, just a kit containing cheap stuff, like Yuma, Wilkinson Sword stick, #6 boar brush and a few packs of blades. Most have upgraded to better stuff later on, and a few has probably never touched them. You can't win them all, but it feels rather good knowing you have saved someone from cartridge shaving.
