I was looking for a new brand of canned goo shaving cream for use when I travel. After doing a little searching on the internet I discovered that Gillette had a new variation of their Foamy line called “Barber Shop Clean”. So, I figure this has got to be worth a try. Could it even be similar to the now discontinued Pinaud Clubman’s canned shaving cream? One could only hope. The shave cream arrived a few days ago and the day after I shaved with it. The scent was not like Pinaud’s; it was more of a baby powder like scent – not bad at all. As advertised, the foam was thick, extra rich and creamy. My shave was close and comfortable and there was no irritation. This is my new travel canned goo! One may ask: Why do I bother sharing this here amongst people who use a brush and cream or soap? Why share this information with people that’ll brandish their straight razors in my direction for even mentioning “canned goo” aloud? Well, here’s why. I figure that if an uninitiated person gets hooked on Gillette’s Barber Shop Clean foamy shave cream, it’s only a matter of time before they migrate to a brush and a traditional cream/soap. That’s how it happened for me many years ago when I started using Pinaud’s canned cream and a Merkur Futur DE. It was only a matter of time before I started thinking about old time barber shops, using a mug and brush – and now, I own more brushes, soaps and creams than a man can use in a life time.
Aye to that! As you state, goo in a can has a place, and some [maybe even "most"] can even be described as nice. I think the aversion that is expressed from time to time towards the canned stuff isn't really to hold something against it, but to show preference to the "traditional" soaps and creams. Anyhow, it was nice to read about your findings! Thanks!
This shave cream is pretty decent, and the smell is great. It was one of about 4 or 5 canned shave creams that I used 2 years ago...with a gillette sensor, and followed up with old spice or aqua velva. It can be rather hard to find, even in the US. Luckily for me, one of the Walgreen's downtown carried it. (only one of the 7 or more Walgreen's in walking distance). I believe they still carry it. The real bonus is that Portillo's was right across the street :drool
