I thought I'd post the before and after pictures of one of my recent purchases. This is a Gillette NEW that was pretty crusty when I bought it. I did two soaks in hot water with dish washing liquid, followed by a toothbrush scrub, then a soak with scrubbing bubbles, followed by a toothbrush scrub, and then I finished it off with some metal polish to really give it a shine. A few questions.... Is this the long comb or the short? I see two distinct metals, what are they? Too me it looks like brass and copper but I doubt they'd use a soft metal like copper. Did I remove too much of the original finish? For what it cost and the little ever to clean it up, I'm very happy with it. I'll be using it for the first time sometime next week. BEFORE: AFTER:
Nice job and I agree about your razor being the short comb. Much of the gold plating seems to be gone and the razor finish is down to the brass tax, but that's probably not your doing, judging from the before pics...
The top part looks like copper to me as well. Too bad it has lost most of the plating, but as I look at the 'before' pics, I guess that was unavoidable. Nice to see a razor being cleaned up and being appreciated and used again. Good job!
BEAUTIFUL!!! Great cleanup. I have a long comb version and it shaves wonderfully. I believe the two metals are brass and copper. Great score I hope you enjoy it a for long time.....
But now you won't be able to resell it on eBay saying:"As found condition. Know that you would want to do the cleaning yourself "!!! I hope you at least saved the rusted no-name blade that you could put back into it!!!!☺
Oh darn, you're right! I guess I'll have to keep it. There was a old Gillette Blue Blade in there when I bought it. It's now in my blade bank.
