Hey Folks! I purchased a Gillette Old Type Safety Razor online and it cost $9 including shipping. It was used pretty roughly and had a tiny crack (still has) on the handle bar's top and some dents on the head, but after I did the deep cleaning, I made a test shave and one edge of my DE razor passed, the other edge wasn't so good, so I won't take any risk and will use it like an SE for further shaves. After the test run, I took it to a plater in a major city I live in Turkey. He plates nickel, chrome, copper, silver and gold. I asked him to plate nickel as I like white tones in watches, razors, manly items in generally. He said It'll be ready tomorrow. As I was busy, I went there after two days. He asked $7 for plating. And I think he did a great job. It looks brand new now. If I can dare to disassemble my adjustable razors completely, I'll take them to him for plating in future. Before the Plating: After the Plating:
Looks fantastic, must be nice to have someone local that will plate for $7. Too bad the turn around time is so long
Thank you all, for your kind words and wishes! Herm2502; Yeah, it's a little bir aggressive to me and it shaves very close but I liked it no irritation or nick yet. Thanks! Luteplayers; 7 dollars for plating is really cheap for me, but I have to wait for a day to let him complete plating.
If you get your angle right and use a light touch, you can get a wonderful shave with the Old Type. What a great deal on that replate job!
That was the key, the angle. I've only tried my old type once. It was a very nice result, no irritation. But getting there was not enjoyable and I would have bet my face would have been on fire all day. I need to try it again. Here's mine:
Looks great, and you can't beat the price. I've been using mine with a very light touch and a Feather blade. I only need two passes with it. Enjoy yours
