Good morning guys !!!! Is the Gillette Open Comb New Razor considered aggressive ? just wondering because it's my first razor I've used for my entry into DE shaving As say compared to another razor in my collection like the super speed or one of my Slims ? Thanks guys
As with many razors, some find them mild, while others find them aggressive. Personally I would call the NEW Long Comb fairly aggressive. No personal experience with the Short Comb though.
So is it a good thing or a bad thing to start of shaving with an aggressive razor ? If I try my other razors will they now suck ?
I have both the NEW SC and LC. I find neither overly aggressive and both give me a solid smooth and close shave. If you want to step it up a bit give the Red Tip a try. Of course a 195 or slim would give you the ability to run up and down the aggression dial. Secondly IMV, all my razors have a different personality. Some I like more than others. As always YMMV as denoted by the folks above.
The best advice I can give you is to learn how to use the razor you own, once you get your technique down you'll conquer any and all razors. FWIW.. I get GREAT shaves from a mild Tech or Super Speed.
Only you can answer that. My favourite razors range from Schick Krona (very mild) to Fatip Grande (fairly aggressive). The only thing with mild razors is that they require a solid technique to be effective (they're picky on the working angle). Edit: definitely not implying that your technique sucks if you don't like mild razors!
True about what different people with think. I personally think the NEW Long Comb is more on the mild side, but that's me. Doesn't matter what you start with as long as you remember - when it comes to pressure, pretend you're trying to take off all the lather without touching the skin.
I personally find overly mild razors harder to use because I tend to overwork the shave (too many strokes...). I find the NEW LC a nice middle-of-the-road razor as far as aggressiveness goes. But this varies from person to person. The key is you're technique. Make the angle shallow and go very lightly and you'll be fine. To find a shallow angle place the top of the razor on your face, handle perpendicular to the floor. Then tip the handle down just until you feel the blade. That's the angle you want. Shave with the muscles of your arm and try not to flex your wrist. Good luck, the NEW is an awesome razor!
LOL that must be an advantage of having learned shaving with a traditional razor from the start ... I would never even think about flexing my wrist Good advice though!
I have 31 DEs and 10 SEs. They run from the very mild Blue Tip SS to the very aggressive OLD Type with the DEs, and from the mild Gem MM (MicroMatic) Push Button to the aggressive Gem MMOC (MicroMatic Open Comb) SEs. I've learned how to use all of them and have achieved BBS with each and every one, some more than others, but BBS nonetheless. They are all in my rotation and none gets favored over another when their turn is next. If you think a razor sucks, that's your call.
Yeah- I'm looking forward to trying my Slim and Super Speed razors. One day when I'm a little more seasoned I'll give my Schlick Everlast a try
For me personally, the Long Comb is a bit more aggressive than the Short Comb, but not that bad. I agree with some above that an adjustable can be very aggressive on it's higher settings, as I have found out when first using them. On the opposite end, I have found out that the Super Speeds can produce a mild shave, especially on a daily use. I have sensitive skin and do not regularly shave everyday, but when I have to, I use one of my Super Speeds. This is a picture of a Super Speed (X2) I recently acquired on Ebay from an estate sale. Only one blade was used from it's pack of blades and just a mild cleaning was needed to clean it with a microfiber cloth, no soap scum at all, and seems like that was the only blade used then just put away as it has nothing wrong with it and very clean. For about $23.00 with case and shipping seemed like a good deal to me.
Good looking razor and glad to hear the super speeds shave good. I have one like yours and also a flared tip
Thx, I wanted a three piece with a fat handle. I get a better grip on it. I picked up a Lot of razors for $18.00, Gillettes, Gems, Star. It had two no date Super Speeds (late 40's?) in good condition and will eventually be sending them to Delta Echo Razor Works to get them done in blue and white (Yankees) and hunter green and yellow (Packers). Plus it had a couple of three piece Gillettes. All in all, not a bad deal. But this one will stay in original condition.
I have the SC and the LC, and neither one is what I would consider aggressive. They are however very nice shavers.
I swore by mild razors then I went to adjustables...I have a couple of red tips and I tried them and actually liked it the trick with an aggressive razor is very little pressure let the weight of the razors head do the work I'm going to try a Schick injector next and some of the folks here tell me I will never go back I'm hoping that isn't true
