Hi gang...Did the Gillette president come in gold. I found one in an antique store but I'm not sure if it's a real president or not what can I look for to tell if it's a president or not. Thanks Greg
The President was Rhodium plated, and the Diplomat and Aristocrat were gold plated. I think the Aristocrat was discontinued while the Diplomat-Gold, and the President-Rhodium, were being produced.
No gold Presidents....They were produced with Rhodium handles & Nickel plated head......also in 2 variants, (one with a smooth band above the TTO knob, the other with knurling on the entire handle).
Which one is more rare. I read they stopped making one of these and Gillette mixed and matched parts creating a prouction frankenrazor which makes it very rare any info on this. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
The smooth band variant of the President is the less often seen. It appears as though Gillette had some leftover smooth band Aristocrat handles & decided to use them up on a few of the early (Y1 &Y2) Presidents.
I think I have one. It's in really bad shape. Should I leave it or replate it. I think I might sell it. Also should I take it apart to replate? It is a Y2. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I just checked my smooth band President & it is actually a Y1, so I corrected my previous post to include that date code as well. As far as replating goes, i've struggled with that decision on many of my "lots of character" razors. I don't know if the cost of replating in Rhodium would net you much profit unless you can get a really great deal on plating. So personally, if I really enjoyed shaving with it & it was one of my favorites. I would probably replate for my own enjoyment. Otherwise, I would probably leave it as is. I'm not well versed on the plating process but I am quite sure a TTO type razor would have to be disassembled before plating............ I just don't know what a replated President would sell for, (even though it is the rarer variant).
It's in really bad shape but I'm just judging by photos. Cost for a dual replate ...nickel head & neck...rhodium handle. $100.00 and that includes taking it apart and putting it back together. I really don't want it for myself. I have a smooth gold one top and bottom are smooth not knarled coming and that's in bad shape also. I don't want to keep that one also. I think the information your searching for is going to be tough. It's all subjective. For instance, I'm collecting for myself and couple of my razors could use replating, but I don't feel that I need it as I'm using all of mine and they are not necessarily for display. Most of the razors you are asking about is for resale. Personnally, I don't care if the razor was replated or it has original plating. I know that I don't want to pay $175 for a razor. I bought my boxed Sheraton for under $50 with it missing all of the plating on the head. If I were to buy it online it would fetch closer to $100 or more for either original plating or replated. You are trying to maximize your investment on the razors you buy to flip. You have to do the homework and see what your razor has sold for in the condition you have and what it sold for in pristine condition. If you got it cheap enough, and you add the cost of replating, can you still sell it for a price someone wants it for? If your razor is selling for approx $100 in great condition and you spend $100 to put it into great condition, you are not going to get your money back. One last thing, just because a razor sells for $100, it shouldn't mean you list your razor for $100. Most of the pricing gets hiked up during a bidding war. Someone sees a rare razor for $20 when it usually goes for $100 and they bid. Another bidder sees the same and starts to bid and so on. In the last seconds the bidder usually will panic and start bidding just so the item doesn't get away ( not all bidders are like this, some have self control). You have to see what these razors are worth and decide if you can make a few bucks flipping them. Reconditioning only works if you got an expensive razor for dirt cheap. But in the end YOU have to do some leg work.
I did get the razors really cheap under $30 each. But they are in really rough shape. That's why they went cheap. Now ones an aristocrat or a diplomat (dont know how to tell the difference) and ones a rare frankenrazor president. The president will cost $100 to restore in a nickel head and a rhodium handle and the gold one will cost $100 as well. Now what will they be worth in perfect restored condition no box no instructions. That is the question. On ebay if I can make 40 or more I'll take it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I've seen presidents as high as $300 no box. I know someone will buy it it's just a question of how long it takes. Someone always has money to burn. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I do all the time but it doesn't say what razors are worth or how rare they might be. It's for Id purposes only. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I think you should review this thread: http://theshaveden.com/forums/threa...t-worth-and-where-can-i-sell-it-thread.18440/
@Primotenore has a beautiful example of a Gillette President. The information offered above is correct.
Y You know I ask these questions so I can gain some knowledge and prevent myself from getting ripped off and maybe some day prevent someone else from getting ripped off. If it offends you that I ask what something might be worth maybe you could give me a helpful answer or just tell me to shut the hell up.
