After hearing all the talk about the Gillette pure shave cream , I had to try it and I must say it worked extremely well. I put a almond size in bottom of bowl and added water and was rewarded with plenty of lather for 3 passes. I normally only do a single pass but wanted to see how the lather would do so I did a WTG and XTG and the third was XTG in opposite direction and there was still lather left in bowl I could have probably done several more passes if I had been so inclined. I had no nicks or weepers at all. If you haven't tried the Gillette pure you should. What are you guys thoughts on the pure cream ?

I have not tried it yet, but have been tempted after hearing very good reviews on it. I’m in a “no buy” year, but it is on my list of future purchases.

I might be tempted at some future point if I can find it at a little better price. But I also looked up the ingredients and saw Menthol in peppermint on the list. Not a fan of either one in my shaving cream. So are these ingredients noticeable and if so what would you say the level is?

It is noticable. I would call it very mild, just a hint of chill. (edit: the chill isn't strong, but it lasts for quite a while after the shave. Up to about 30 minutes I would say. I am sensitive to menthol since I rarely use it). The peppermint is not noticable in the scent. The scent itself is a vaguely masculine generic cologne scent with a dash of sea buckthorn thrown in to give it some "fresh" oomph. Old Spice Sea Spray bodywash would be an excellent companion scent. In the same scent 'family,' as it were.

Performance is moderately good. It is capable of making Barbasol can levels of lather, though at that point it loses a lot of slickness and the brush doesn't have good flow through. You'll need to squeeze the brush to get it out.

If you go for a wetter lather, kind of thin and soapy, it's as slick a shaving cream as any out there, but it tends to clog your razor.

If you try for a balance between the two, you'll end up with a perfectly acceptable lather that won't stand out in any way, with a perfectly acceptable scent that is in no way memorable.

Gillette's fine tradition of making one product that fits most is proudly upheld in this Gillette product.

I don't like a lot of menthol. I prefer my menthol on the lighter side...and by "lighter," I mean "none at all." If I was traveling and needed shaving cream immediately, I would buy it, no hesitation. Will I ever use up the tube I have at home? Doubtful.

Edit: YMMV. I found Kiss my Face shaving cream to be a better shaving cream and it's cheaper. I can also usually find it locally without too much trouble. If someone likes KmF, and likes the scent and menthol of Pure, then they would have no issues switching to Pure.

Thanks Ryan! Sounds like something I would not care for. Particularly since I have a couple of the big bottles of kmf in the den.

I noticed a coldness when I used it that lasted for a little while but was acceptable. I guess I got lucky I was able to build a lather that was very slick didn't clog my razor and would make any fan of the " Lather porn " happy. I guess each person has their own likes and dislikes but I liked it. Someone on another site said they found it on sale at one of their local stores for about 3 dollars so it is definitely worth a try. With warmer weather starting I think it will be nice to have.. I also didn't notice the peppermint in it. It was my first time using it but I will be using it again for my next shave too so I can give more thoughts after that. I thought it did very good , maybe not as well as some of the artisan soaps but honestly I wouldn't expect it too because they are not even in the same category... If you find it for a good deal I would still recommend trying it because you might just like it.

i think the best drug store type non artisan locally made (this continent) shave cream to date for me has been the pacific shave co caffeinated shave cream.awesome slick quick lathers.
