Hello, After reading the thread about "aggressive modern razors", I noticed that several folks seem to own a red tip and a slim. (I don't own a Red Tip, but it isn't out of the question for a future purchase.) My very limited tests tell me that a 1959 super speed flare tip "feels like" a 3 setting on the slim. And the edwin jagger DE89 "feels like" a 5 setting on the slim. What slim setting seems closest to a Red Tip for you guys? ... Or, how does a Red Tip compare to a DE89? Thanks, Carl from MO
Blue tip: 1-2 Flare tip: 3-4 Red tip: 5-6 (on a Fatboy), possibly as high as 7 (on a Slim). The Fatboy, due to it's weight and balance, feels a bit more aggressive than a Slim at the same setting, though the shave is the same.
Thanks. I wrongly assumed the blue tip was the same as the flare tip. I can't imagine a less agressive razor than the flare tip, but I guess it's out there. ... And it's painted blue.
Thanks to everyone who responded. I guess I will try my slim on 6 or 7 for a week, and see how I like it. That may help decide where my next stash of money goes. Why would I buy a red tip if I already have an adjustable slim? ... ... Hmmm. Let me think of an excuse for that, later.
I have both a Red Tip and a Slim. I got the Slim first. I recommend getting the Red Tip because it gives you options. For some odd reason, I can never make up my mind which razor should be an everyday razor. Some days razor 'A' doesn't do as well as razor 'B', and vice-versa. It's weird. Sometimes my Red Tip seems too aggressive and a day later it's perfect. I personally love Gillette's and hope to have one of everything!
Yup. But with the right blade and proper technique, it can still deliver a BBS shave. I know. I've done it. Not every time I use it, mind you, but it has been done.
