I stopped in a local antique store today hoping to find a Gillette Slim. Instead, in one of the cases I found a Fatboy (in okay shape but kinda pricy at $75) and a gold TTO with an open comb. I didn't immediately know what the gold TTO was and tried unsuccessfully to negotiate the Fatboy down to what I thought it was worth. After I went home, I looked online for "Gillette open comb TTO" and quickly discovered that the gold open comb razor was a Gillette Sheraton - for $28. Seemed like a pretty reasonable price for such a unique piece of Gillette history so I went back and bought it. Got it for $25.60 - seems like a pretty good price to me. Based on pictures I've seen online I think it's in pretty good shape. I cleaned it up a bit and will post some pictures later tonight or tomorrow. They also had a couple Schick injectors and I picked up an Eversharp G-type for $9.50. Now I get to try them out in the coming week!
I think I got pretty lucky on the finish and the overall condition. It opens and closes smoothly, the doors close straight and tight and the plating is in very good shape. And its a 78 to 79 year old razor to boot. I got lucky on this one!
Nice find! Nothing like finding stuff in the wild. I have been looking for one of these for a while now (aristocrat, Sheraton, presidential, etc.) Patience is a vurtue.
I paid almost double what you did for one in very slightly better shape, and considered that a bargain. You done good.
So I went back to the same antique store this afternoon and the price on the Fatboy was dropped to $24.50. They gave me 10% off of that price too! I'll need to give it a good soak to remove soap buildup but it should clean up well and it functions perfectly. A Sheraton and a Fatboy for under $50 in total - not too bad.
