Krumholz mentions the Somerset as a variant of the Tuckaway, but I had yet to see any information on what a Somerset was. There has been some discussion that this was the Somerset: I had no reason not to believe this, but hadn't seen anything that actually called it that. Then I found this one. I have seen this case design, but never with the set name printed inside. Some of the gold has worn away, but you can get most of it, and the rest has an imprint from the stamp. I am sure people aren't quite as excited as I am about this, but this fills in another hole, so I thought I would share.
Wow! Between Achim's site and the Compendium, I saw two different variants, one with the striped box and one with the flowers. But BOTH, that's so cool!
I'll defer to Rodd, but here what I've seen in my limited searching... The bar handle was used in some of the Tuckaway variants. The NEW head was widely used in later Tuckaway variants. I'm guessing that AND the case design is what distinguishes the Somerset. But Rodd did make one error: I AM excited by this! Very well done, Rodd! Hat's off to ya.
Achim has one that I think has the same design on the case, but not marked Somerset. Interesting note, he has asked for pictures of my set for his website. I am honored! I don't know if it was available as a New Improved or not, but my set does contain a New Norfolk with common Bar Handle razor. The bar handle is shorter than the normal bar handle. I thought you got one off the bay?? Are we looking for another?
I was hoping to find a non gold version too........luckily, I picked one up on B yesterday, not the prettiest, but it will do for now.
