I've just obtained a SS with black handle and silver twist knob. It appears to be a 1973. What kind of shave properties can I expect compared to my blue tip SS or my ball end Tech?
While I haven't used that exact model SS, the reputation is it will be more agressive than the blue tip or Tech, but not overly so.
Hmmm... I have one of those. Been a while since I've used it, so I don't recall just exactly how it compared to my Tech, perhaps a tad more aggressive than the Tech. I do remember it gave me a great shave, though. I don't have, nor have I ever used, a Blue Tip.
I have a 48-49 SS and two Techs. I just used the SS a couple of days ago, and this was the experience: While shaving, I was under the impression I had the smoothest shave ever, but after I rinsed the lather off of my face, I realized I had multiple little nicks that I didn't even feel myself getting. Seeing as how I only nick myself about once a year or less, this was sort of shocking. I've used the SS before without this experience, so it doesn't happen all the time. Anyway, my overall impression of the SS is that it's more aggressive than the Tech, for better or worse. I prefer the Tech, but I could see why someone might like the SS more. The SS gives a closer shave in earlier passes, but is more temperamental; the Techs seem to take more passes, but with less irritation.
The results Well it's only one shave but the 1973 SuperSpeed is definitely more aggressive than an SS blue tip or a ball tip Tech. It felt like the # 6 or 7 setting on my Fatboy. The razor feels overall heavier than the Blue Tip but I think the extra weight is in the handle. The head of the 1973 looks like its components are a tad thinner and lighter. You really hear this razor shaving. Almost as loud as my GEM SE. I did get a very good shave with this and will keep it in my rotation.
