Just a quick question, I've found lots of different techs online (models, years, etc) and was wondering if some were considered more mild than others, or do they all shave relatively the same since they are all techs?

(Probably a dumb question, very sorry:ashamed001)

sol92258 I have no earthly idea

I can't answer for all techs, but I have a '57 ball end tech, and a no date code fat handle tech, they both shave about the same, quite mild, but smooth.

I also have a ball end and a fat handle. I agree with sol92258. I have noticed different blades affect the aggressiveness. Still a bit mild for my taste, but I keep 'em in the rotation just because.

Oh, and don't apologize for the questions. You're asking because you don't know. That's how we learn.

The base plate is the key. If your Tech has a base plate with oval holes in it, it will be on the mild side. If the base plate has triangular holes, the razor will be more aggressive. Neither will be super aggressive though.

I use a Tech with the triangular holes in the base plate and find it wonderful. It provides an excellent shave with no irritation or problem. Probably should use it more.

I have a Fat handle Tech from the 40's. I usually stick a feather in mine and shave with that. Even with this combination I find it to be a mild razor. Hope this helps.

There are a number of Techs with different heads and heft (weight) including the Travel Techs that are fun and useful. Blades are also to be considered as you will find a favorite for different razor types. Others will not like the ones you like, so gather a Den and rotation like most of us. It is also interesting to buy several of the same razor, over time, and put different blades in them.

As previously indicated, the Techs have a reputation as a mild shaver. I used techs in several different incarnations and each was a mild shaver.

Yeah... that is basically my take on it as well. Also, the aluminum ones were even milder...

+1...I have three Ball Ends (one in nickel, one in gold, one aluminum handle), a gold-tone Fluted Ball End, a couple of Fat Handles (one with the triangular holes and one with oblong holes), and a British Tech and I can't seem to tell the difference between any of them shaving-wise. I like the looks, weight, and feel of the British Tech and the regular nickel plated Ball End best...my least favorite are the Fat and Aluminum Handle Techs as they feel to light for my preference. :D

I used a ball end with a Derby today. Good incredibly mild shave, but that is exactly what I was looking for.

Ain't it grand being able to choose your shave based on razor and blade combinations.

I think I ordered a ball-handle 3-piece Gillette tech from the 1940s last night for my first razor. I'm not 100% sure. Maybe you guys can help me figure it out. It's brassy. It has a ball on the end, and the word "Gillette" across the front in a diamond pattern.

I would send photos but I don't have it just yet. Anyway, it's my first. I know it's old and inexpensive, but I am so looking forward to giving this oldie a spin.

You can't go wrong with a tech. I have been DE shaving for over 40 years and still use a tech, occasionally.
