I would love to know more about these, but I can't seem to find anything. One question in particular is that the one I recently saw had a head marked "Made in USA" but the case was marked "The Distributors of this model for the world Vienna Austria" Is the head a mismatch, or was the head, or entire razor made in the states then distributed out of Austria? Seems strange. Any information on this set would be much appreciated. Thank you!
I have two of these style razors. But neither is a Gillette. That is a nice looking 4 piece. I got to have one now., thanks Rodd.
I can't help you with the info Rodd - but just wanted to say that would make one sweet little travel razor. It is such a teeny thang!!! Yet a full size razor. Whenever I am out travelling I stick a Tech in a ziploc - just not the same thing! Good luck with the mystery! :chores016
Thanks guys! I have a couple similar, one Merkur and one re-branded Hoffritz. But this was the first time I have seen one of these Gillettes. I think I will use the Merkur for travel, I spent too much on this one to risk losing it. Achim chipped in across the street with an advertisement, and Ray chipped in saying that there were two styles of these, and that mine is the latter. Vintage Merkur Travel: Advertisement for the Vienna Vest Pocket from Gillette (Thank you very much Achim!)
Fuzzy, YOU of all people wanting a Gillette or even a DE travel razor amazes me. The SE guy that you are I can't believe that you would not just go with a nice neat little '12 style GEM, GEM Jr. or ER in a travel case. You see them on Ebay all the time. What's up the bunny selling out to the DE guys. shocked003 Oh, and Robb, nice looking little razor. But not as nice as those Ever Roddy brushes by the Knotty Badger!
The pebbled case on the Merkur is really nice. That one would indeed make a fine travel choice. With all the razors you have dood I can't figure how you sort out what to travel with!! I would probably have an extra suit case with a 'modest selection' of thirty or forty if I were you. You know, just to suit my mood! I have yet to come across a 4 piece while out and about, but my luck will break one day!
My Vienna Vest Pocket has arrived. Very cool set. I am under the impression that the heads were made in USA but everything else was made in Vienna Austria. I was surprised that on mine there isn't even a hint of plating on the bottom part of the handle, the top looks like it has very light plating. My guess is that it just had really thin plating, and that the head was plated at the Gillette plant in USA.
I missed this before.. I travel with a SE of one kind or another. I have some travel 1912,1914, 1924. I do collect intresting DE stuff and shave with the open combs some. I am a die hard Gemlican.
This is an interesting read and I never thought much of the travel razors until this thread.. really good stuff guys. Rodd, I've never seen a travel razor such as that.. you have such keen eyes in finding them gems! Good luck on your hunt for more info.
