Tuesday Night's shave, featuring my favorite blade to use, and my trusty 1968 Gillette Slim. A good shave certainly is an excellent way to close out the night. Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk
During the last year, I finally fell in love with my vintage Gillettes, which before that I was not the biggest fan of - as if a door just opened... So, here are my favorites - the Superspeeds. I haven't met a Gillette Superspeed I didn't love. They all shave about the same, but I do have my favorites. First, Flare Tips. I like the aesthetics of them more than 40's style. My favorite is 1957. Then my birth year and quarter, 1966. Back in '62 Gillette went to a slimmer head profile, and changed from retaining screws to rings, so all of the "newer" Superspeeds rattle a little. Shave quality is the same as the older flare tips. The following year, in 1967, they changed to black anodized aluminum handles, and the razors got a little lighter. Same head. Any of these 3 are fantastic shavers, mild yet efficient.
1953 #34 german tech Note the unique base plate. one can see it's ancestry from the 1930's german Rotbart hybrids.. uses a slightly steeper angle also compared to regular techs..
I started out with the Gillette Slim when I was 15, I think I paid under $2 for it, Used it for many years. I also got the 109 BB another great Gillette razor, But after my brother gave me our Dads Fatboy, It became my Favorite Gillette and I think the Best razor Gillette made, I now have 4 Fatboys 3 Slims, 2 109s.
I think my first vintage Gillette razor was a Ball End Old Type. That led to buying a NEW, New Improved, Tech, Slim Adjustable, Super Speed, Flare Tip and others. And multiples of each as well. Ironically I've sort of moved away from the vintage Gillettes as I've really enjoyed the shaves I get from my Ikon Open Comb and my RazoRock Game Changer open comb. I have taken the nicer heads from an Old Type, a NEW and New Improved and put them on a modern handle to change up the feel. I also pull out my Schone (made by Fatip) open comb on occassion. It's not as enjoyable as the other two but still delivers a nice shave.
