India is a country which is very well-known and famous for her fantastic creams, particularly the Godrej creams. Well, Godrej also produces a very nice shaving soap which is a perfect buy for a wetshaver on a very tight budget. Let me explain: Ease of lathering: 10/10--Super lather in no time. This stuff explodes! Longevity of lather: 10/10--One of the most stable soap lathers you can ever find. General skincare: 7/10--Use a good aftershave balsam, because this stuff is not too moisturizing. Scent: 10/10--100% barbershoppy and "old-school". Exactly what I love in a soap or cream. Price: 10/10--In India this soap sells for pennies. The poorest of the poor can probably afford it. Would I buy again? 10/10--My goodness, how can I not buy it again - it's so good! This stuff was referred to as the Williams of India, but I very much disagree. With a lot of respect to Williams users, and in my honest and humble opinion, this soap can make Williams look like nothing. So much easier to lather, stable lather, and a great scent, and even slightly more skincare than Williams, as well as so low-priced. You cannot go wrong!
I wish the Indian Grocery store would carry the shaving soap aswell. Mine just carries the shaving cream.
I lathered about 3/4 of a puck of Godrej Shaving Round on the puck about 6 months back, and have to agree with Crackstar's assessment. It gave me a very nice lather, and I actually quite like the scent. I find Modern Williams to be basically unusable, but I quite enjoy the Godrej. I have 3-4 pucks more of it, and I am sure it will give me many more wonderful shaves.
I like the Godrej round. I got one from WCS a while back, when I was adding several small items to an order to bring it up to the "free" shipping level. Inexpensive enough on its own to discourage me from paying anything for shipping. There are Indian groceries in some towns that I visit occasionally, but I've never remembered to look there for it. It's another good soap among many. I honestly don't find it better than the current Williams, but matters of taste like that aren't really arguable. It has its own character, and is one of many inexpensive soaps that do a good job.
If you want to "import" them from India www.desistores.net has them together with other interesting things. I've got mine there.
http://www.desistores.net/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=53_63_84_193&products_id=2073 Also from http://www.ebay.com ,they sell it as: 2 x Godrej Shaving Round Soap Luxury 100gm I have it,it is not a great or "poor" soap but something in the middle I have made an "improve" to it and worked.
1) A few drops of Glycerine, that made the blade "rolling" better in the face 2) Mix it with Weleda, the lather now is a little bit better.
I'd say the Tabac is still a better soap overall. The Godrej soap is not moisturizing as I stated, whereas the Tabac gives very good skincare.
Yeah, my local Indian groceries do not carry the round either , only the cream. Looked at that website in India, but really did not see how to translate the price to USD to get an idea what it would cost to order in a supply.
Hmmm, checked on ebay. 2 for $2.99 plus $4.99 shipping. For that money I can go over to local Kroger and buy 8 Williams rounds. So I may never know if the Godrej is better or not.
With my soap of the week rotation, now it's Godrej's turn. I might have to load the brush a bit longer, but the results are good. The smell is very pleasant, sort of a hint of barbershop talc.
Have you had any trouble paying through the Desistores? I tried several times to buy some Old Spice shave cream through desistores and my credit card kept denying it. Credit card was fine, used it all the time. Anyone have that trouble with them?
