Nice razors! Looks like your a silver steel fan? I've seen some straights made of this, but haven't heard much about how its affects the shave or honing process. What's your take?
Thanks Gents!! Like was said, "SILVER STEEL" was pretty much an advertising gimmick. From what I can tell, all of the Sheffield blades of that era hone about the same. They hone up easy and get bloody damn sharp. They seem a bit harsh off a 12K naniwa, but they mellow nicely after a few stroppings on linen and leather. I've been using that 9/8 Greaves Masonic for several months now two or three times a week. Shaves excellently. Here's another big one. Made for KING in New York. Appears to have been made by W&B as it looks pretty much like all I've seen. Shaves great too. After a honing session the other day. Rolled a smoke and had some whiskey. John Primble's SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN with picked bone handles. Traded this one off the other day. LOVED the scales but didn't care for the way it shaved. Here's a John Pound & Co, Sheffield w/ivory scales. Nice shaver it is, just not as nice as the older wedgies. Let's see if any of you gents recognize this tang stamp. I'll give you a hint. It's American.
TOO long according to my wife...... Actually, I've only been chasing razors for about three years. I've been gathering knives and such off and on all my life. Here's an interesting old timer for ya. only marks on anything are the number "1". Tortoise scales and came boxed. I have a feeling it's French, but don't that to be a fact. A few more that are waiting to be made usable or scrapped out for parts. The John Pound pictured above is in this pic as it was when I got it. It cleaned up nicely.
Those would be "faux" tortoise. It is cow horn which has been dyed to imitate tortoise. Most of those that you see from that era were not tortoise. The bottom picture also has a razor with faux tortoise scales. The razor pictured above with all the extra blades does have tortoise scales. Odd thing is that they have a reddish hue when back lit.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who still rolls his smokes. That Primble is sweet looking. I've had a few Primble knives over the years but lost them all.
