Howdy! I have not used hair tonics in years. I have mostly used hair spray to hold my hair in place. I have some of the Pinaud Clubman hair tonics now and have been using them. However, once the tonic and hair dry out, there is no control and a puff of wind will send hair in all directions. I wonder if a bit of baby oil or some other product might be available to use after or before the hair tonic to hold my hair in place. I don't like a greasy or slick look however. Your recommendations appreciated. Always, Gene
You're probably going to have to carry a comb with you, tonics even with oil won't keep the wind at bay.
I use pomade, whipped wax, butch wax, hair taffy, Groom & Clean and Vitalis...all depending on how old my hair cut is. I get my hair cut about every three months-ish. I get it whacked high and tight with a # .5 guard. As the hair grows out, I change my product to keep my hair in line.
Man my dad wore Groom and Clean for years. When we would go swimming the water dripping from his hair would be blue/gray colored.
Groom and clean here as well. On days where the wife and I go out for a special evening, i.e, her company's Christmas party which is suit and tie attire for the men, I use hair gel, super hold. Once it sets up, it's like wearing a hair cap it's so stiff. I was going to try Brylcreme, just because I like the jingle. " A little dab'll do ya".
Laugh all you want, I use Suave mousse. It keeps the wind at bay and the 'do nice and steady. Plus it's inexpensive - always a plus!
I've been using the Jeris Hair Tonics with oil for a few years now and really like it. It adds soft manageability and the oil darkens my hair a bit which slightly hides the grey. I get all kind of comments on my lack of grey hair but without the Jeris the grey is much more noticeable.
I recently tried Jeris with oil and found ti pretty good, as well. I like most of the "classic grooms" that I have tried. To the op, Id' suggest giving a tonic with oil a try, or maybe a tube of protein 29 or groom and clean ( I like protein 29 better, but G&C might be a better fit for you)
Howdy! Thanks to all for replying! I got a bottle of Vitalis and use it after the hair tonic. Seems to work pretty well. I may give the other options like Jeris with oil a try soon. Always, Gene
GeneRector, I am not sure how you wear your hair, but you mentioned needing control, but not wanting a slick or greasy look. My overall favorite product is Bumble & Bumble's Sumotech. It's a "paste," but isn't sticky. I have found that most products offering a dry or matte look are too weak and don't offer enough hold. Most products that offer enough hold look too wet/slick or make my hair too hard. The Sumotech is a perfect balance. It offers great hold and looks natural. It usually runs about $23 to $25, but a little goes a long way. A container usually lasts me about 2 months.
When I let my hair grow long, I have a terrible time keeping my hair in place. I have a couple of "cow licks" in the back. Nowadays I very rarely use any kind of spray or gel or what have you for my hair, but I found that a product called "Groom N' Clean" made by Suave will keep my hair in place without much of a greasy feeling to it. Plus, like it says, it will clean your hair when you rinse your hair the next shower or bath you take. I rarely use it now but when I do it works for me. Perhaps it might work for you too. At the nearest Wal-Mart or drugstore is where you should be able to find it.
Howdy! I will look into the Sumotech. I see the Groom and Clean at Walmart all the time, but have not tried it yet. I will think on it! Always, Gene
Did you try Brylcreem? It works very well. Non Oily yet gives a finished look. Groom & Clean is also good but I prefer the smell of the Brylcreem. They lasts a long time If you can get the tub like the picture below that would be better than the tube kind you get at Walgreens.
The Clubman tonic is really just for smell. It doesn't provide any hold. Some of the other Pinaud tonics (Portugal and Quinine) have glycerin so they provide a minimal hold. I used it to moisturize the scalp and give my hair a tad bit of shine. Im not a big fan of the one with oil, it seems more oily than say Eucris or Coronis out of the Trumper line. Lovely smell. Andrea
I prefer brylcream to groom and clean. G&C seems to dry my hair and I'm not a big fan of the scent (tho it isn't horrible). Brylcream seems to leave just enough shine wihtout looking greasy and good control.
Recently, I've used Razorock Shave Wax on my face and hair. I have also used Nivea hand creme that has lanolin along with other ingredients to hold the hair down and make it less dry looking.. Being 61 with dry gray hair, this helps my hair look better.
Another good product is Paul Mitchell Fast Form. It is a "cream gel" which will give decent hold to my wild curly hair, without the stiffness of most gels.
Stopped using it when I was in the Army. I had a Sargent Major that always used something in his hair that kept it perfect. What ever it was it also must have stained his shirt collars because a constant part of his uniform was a Large White Handkerchief that he wore over his shirt collars. Since then I decided that if shampoo or conditioner wasn't enough i'd go without!
