I have definitely found what I like, but it has taken me a few years and numerous products to get here. I presently prefer face lathering soaps with a smaller brush, usually between 21-23 mm knot width and 44-49 mm loft, and performing a three-pass shave, followed by a splash of after shave lotion. I started out bowl lathering shaving creams using a large brush, around 25mm x 54 mm, and trying to perform a four-pass shave everytime, followed by the use of balms. Has anyone else ended up using items very different from where they started? Truth be told, at some point my shaving preferences could change again, and maybe that's just part of the fun!
I have moved to an adjustable razor & discovered the virtues of a shaving bowl. But in terms of soap, blades, etc., no, I sill like the same stuff.
Started with DE but now use straights almost exclusively and bowl lathered creams. Now I still use the same brush but I face lather only and have been doing so for almost 2.5 years. Also have flipped back and forth between creams and soaps but, I just like creams better overall.
I think the biggest change for me has been with the soaps I now prefer. Truly, ignorance was bliss. If I hadn't started looking for straight razors on the internet I'd still be happily shaving with Williams.
I have discovered new blades, soaps and creams since taking up traditional wetshaving, and now use an Edwin Jagger DE89 instead of a Merkur 34C. My preferences have not really changed since I started wetshaving, though. I still use a safety razor, and prefer a brush, mug and shave soap, do not face lather, and do not use a shaving bowl. I still use my first brush, a Dovo pure badger, and a three-pass shave. I actually used three pass shaves even before using a safety razor. It took me over ten years to discover, and even then by trial and error. Three pass shaves work better with a safety razor than with a cartridge razor, however.
