I use headslick shave cream Derby Extra and any DE razor I feel is right for the job a little stubble I use a Senator or a Fat handle Tech.Alot of stubble I use a Red Tip or a Fat Boy on 9. But if you are just starting out I suggest a Tech or a Blue Tip they are very forgiving. But I have used every razor I have from a 1910 to a no 13 Aristocrat I like the open comb best for the head and face. After the shave I use rubbing alcohol and Head Lube moisture lotion and have never gotten razor burn or bumps. I started shaveing my head in 1994 with a Slim and Williams soap.
I don't care how much stubble I have, a Fatboy on 9 would rip my head apart. I like very mild razors on my head - Fatboy on 3 or a Weishi being my favorites. How do you think the headslick compares to the more traditional creams and soaps? I've considered trying it out but haven't heard from anyone using it with a DE razor.
Shaved my spud just this morning with Williams soap and a 1908 Single Ring Gillette. Nothing to it, BBS in 3 passes. No need to be skeered. Just take it slow and do NOT bear down on the razor. I've also had some very good head shaves with my Tech, a Slim Adjustable, a 1912 Gem Jr, and even a Lather catcher. I wouldn't recommend a Gem Micromatic Open Comb for a head razor though. For years I did canned goo and a Mach 3, all of the above are FAR superior
It may be sacrilegious, but I use a Mach 3 on my dome. Same lather as my face. The two razor routine isn't a bit of trouble and the M3 does the job with nary a nick or cut. (Usual disclaimer) YMMV.
All very true HOWEVER you now have to buy those Mach 3 cartridges for $4 a piece, thanks but no, for a long time, I was skiddish about using a SE on my head and would use only the slim adjustable or the Tech. Then one day I tried the 1912 and it was magic. However the dome region is still a no-go zone for my Micromatic OC.
I used to use a cartridge razor for my head, but decided that the DE was doing a better job on my face then the cartridge was doing on my head. The learning curve wasn't very steep as I'd been face shaving with the DE for over a year. Now I feel that a Gillette NEW with long combs is one of the best head shaving DE razor available. The long turned over combs are comfortable against the head and make maintaining proper blade angle easy.
I have been trying the brushless cream from Kiehls "White Eagle", it gives a superb shave on face and head. HOWEVER !!! it clogs up the blades of my HeadBlade Sport and my Wilkinson Quattro. I have tried getting advice from Kiehls who have suggested using less cream. OK I may have been using too much product but I still am having problems and it is a real pig to clean out the razor after the shave. Good product though and worth trying.
