    hey everyone

im a 19 year old ontarian who just got into wet shaving.

I contracted my mothers sensitive skin problems, doctors say my hairs are too thin, so i when i shave the skin grows over the hairs and since they are too thin to penetrate the new skin, i get ingrown hairs that look like nasty pimples and hurt like crazy.

its been 3 years since it started and my beard is starting to thicken so i am getting less ingrown hairs, unfortunately they leave scars, i have tried everything, spent over 500 dollars in medications that barely work.

i have even tried electric, but yet it still happens

i have switched to wet shaving with a replaceable straight razor since i dont wanna spend time honing and maintaining a blade, this is my second time shaving with it and i LOVE IT!!!!:D

i only cuut myself 5 times today, which is good for a newb right?:happy102

i am using a cheapy straight razor, which i like, im going to be getting a dovo shavette soon, depending on how straight shaving goes for me.

i use a Wilkinson sword badger brush, works fine for me:confused:

my soap is the crappy Wilkinson blue soap, which gives a bad lather, but it was only 2 bucks so it couldn't hurt to try.

i have a few questions for ur guys, what should i do after i finish shaving, what products do you suggest i use to minimize razor bumps and ingrown hairs (brands), what soap is the best value for the dollar, thanks:D

    Welcome!
Try a product called Tend Skin to help with the ingrwon hairs, or apply some plain witch hazel after shaving to help close the pores for less ingrowns.

    Welcome aboard.
I can't agree with you. The blue Wilkinson soap makes a quite decent lather. But it hurts my skin so I don't use it. I think you should replace it. There are some products available in Canada that are far better with skincare.
Try to make a peeling twice a week. This could reduce your ingrown hair problem.

First off , welcome to the Den

Next, don't sell that Wilkinson soap short, it's not bad stuff. Wet the surface of the soap and the brush with hot water and then work the soap with the brush until you've got a nice thick paste on the tips of the bristles. Take that paste directly to your face and build your lather there rather than using a bowl. With a little practice you should get a decent lather that way.

With the skin problems you describe, Proraso cream might not be such a hot idea - its got a lot of menthol in it. The Main St pharmacy chain carries Kaloderma camomile shave cream and the Metro Supermarket carries Kappus aloe vera shave cream, which are both good and gentle creams. Loblaws carries Kiss My Face shave cream, and it's good too.

Thayer's Witch Hazel lotion, a good alcohol free aftershave, is available in some pharmacies and health food stores. I think I've seen it in Loblaws too. It will be kinder to sensitive skin than the alcohol based ones that us leathery old guys use.

I'd recommend a hot moist towel before you shave and a cold moist towel after you finish and before you put on your aftershave. The hot towel will moisten your skin and soften your whiskers. The cold towel will tighten your skin back up and sooth any razor burn you may have. Look for terrycloth bar mops at Walmart; they're decently priced and just the right size to use as shaving towels.

    Best Regards

hey everyone! its my 3rd time cutting with the straight razor, its great for giving my bro or dad a trim but hard to use on myself lol.

i do love the fact that it can give amazing lineups on the beard and head.

im thinking of getting a safety razor and trying one of those out! too bad i dont grow a full beard like a real man:sick007

my dad never really grew a beard when he was young eaither lol

but i prefer shaving over electric since electric tends to just yank the hairs out and causes pimples, and to say the blades are a fortune.

im gonna grab a cheapy safety razor i saw on ebay for 5 bucks, i already ordered 100 derby single edge blades but it looks like il be re ordering some more doubles for my other safety

hey thanks for the tips, ur right about the wilkinsons, i transfered it to a big bowl and beat the crap out of it and it made a decent lather, but still it does not glide as well, i have some nivea aerosol cream which is amazing, super thick like goop and smooth too, but something in it that causes my skin to burn:sick007

and i will have to look into that witch hazel, so far im using some tea tree oil and fucidin my doctor gave me, the tea tree is super smelly but strong, it makes the scars peel right off, but burns as well

i will have to look into these since i have tried everything with my doctors:confused:
