Hello folks, I'm new to the forum and to DE shaving (3 weeks). Years ago I got a bowl, brush and soap kit and loved it. For some reason, I fell away and started using Barbasol - probably because it was faster. I stuck with Gillette razors, from the Track II on through the Fusion. Never liked the disposables. But when my Fusion blades became dull I got sick at seeing the cost of replacements. I decided I didn't want to waste the money on replacement cartridges, so I picked up a 1956 SS Flair tip, then a Vulfix Super Badger (660) brush. The razor came with a pack of Shark Super Stainless blades, and they seem pretty nice. I'm giving Derby Extra SS blades a try and I like them too. I have a few other samples to try too, so I'm pretty happy at this point. I can see where this may cost me more with all the different products to check out, but at least I look forward to the shave instead of wishing I could avoid it. My latest addition is a G12 scuttle. Love the warm lather! My wife thinks I'm crazy to spend so much time on reading about shaving But I think spending the time has saved me from a lot of mistakes and improved the experience. I'm looking forward to being part of your community. I've learned a ton here already. Seems like a nice group. All the best, Bill Smyrna, Georgia
Welcome aboard! This is the best group I've found so you're in the right place. Don't worry about those looks your wife gives you either...none of us have died from them. Glad to have you along!
to TSD "Bill" It was my experience that in the beginning "traditional" shaving was a tiny bit more expensive than cart shaving, mainly due my getting a terminal case of RAD! But as you noted the shave is so much more enjoyable and interesting because of the different equipment and products I acquired. The RAD only lasted a few years and I've now settled down. I use a couple of DE razors(Weber DLC/Gillette "NEW" LCOC, a couple of different blades(Vikings Sword/Astra SP) mainly because they both work VERY well for me and I have so d@** many of them, 1 soap(Arko), 1 preshave lotion(CHL), 1 post shave balm(Nivea) and an assortment of After Shaves. Don't get me wrong I still get the urges to acquire and do on occasion, but it's more in control. The desire to try different razors and blades never completely leaves you. So just sit back and enjoy it.
A warm welcome to you from North Texas. You might want to take a look at some of the references contained in my signature line below for discussions of the 30 Day systems and more on shaving hardware and software. With that being said ... Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
Thanks very much for the welcome and the links. I enjoyed reading about the 30 day rule and 30 day focus - great ideas. I was also impressed by your blade evaluation, and I was pleased that my sample pack has some that did well: Shark Super Stainless & and the Polsilver. I'm on my second Derby and I'm not finding it quite as smooth as the Shark. I'll go back to the Shark the next time I change blades to confirm that I like it better than the Derby. Once that blade is used up I plan to try two of the Polsilvers. At that point, I think I'll buy a couple packs of my favorite and stick with it for a while and work on my technique. If there is a 30 day rule/focus thread for July, I'll plan on joining in!
Hi Bill. Welcome to the Den. Since the INTERNET it's amazing that every act in life becomes a research project. Decisions that used to be made in seconds now require days of research...
