I got in a discussion with my 12 going on 13 year old duaghter this evening. I was showing her that they're female members here who enjoy shaving as much as Her dad does. She was schocked Thanks Shawna, Sara-s, Queen of Blades. the few I showed her. I scrolled down the scents of soaps and ASM we have at the TSD Store with her. She is truly interested in trying the DE shaving experience. Here is the kicker She shaves with cartridges now. I don't have a problem getting her a nice start up set. But I need my fellow woman shavers advise as to what a teenager would want in scents, razor recommends and after shave products. I want to make this a big dream come true for her on Her 13th Birthday. So I have two months and two houses her mothers and mine. She remembered play shaving with me. And sees how much I enjoyed it! So wants her shave to be more than just a bore. So this DAD humbly is asking the help of all our Moms', Aunts', Grandmothers' and fellow female shavers that can impart knowledge or assist in anyway. Thank you in advance for my oldest Baby Girl Tara Jo.
Glad to know that she is interested. As for suggestions, I think a badger hair brush would be nice. (This is touching legs, not a face, so I think boar would be kind of scratchy for her.) As for the actual razor, I personally prefer something with a textured grip & a long handle. ( I use a Parker 29L) This makes it easier to hold in the shower (where most women shave) and to reach around to the back of the leg. I like to start with a pre-shave oil, but those are pretty easy to make. As for scent, that is very individual and I do not know her preferences. If I had to guess, I would go with rose, lavender or something citrus. BTW, don't forget to get her some kind of blade disposal box. If you are a little handy, you could use a mint tin and paint it in her favorite color.
I'm not a lady Zilla, but my 14 y/o daughter is and she loves the Schick Krona. She has a Gillette Lady Star (the blue one) too but prefers the Krona. She has a really nice badger brush I reknotted for her (hint, hint) and a boar too (a cheap Burmashave brush). She likes them both but seems to use the boar more.
Hi Todd and Tara Jo! The brush is really going to be her preference. I have badger, boar, horse, and a synthetic re-knot. I prefer my boar brushes ( I have two that I routinely use), but I also like my black badgers (a Sabi and a TGN re-knot) when I need a good exfoliation. The funny thing about a boar brush is once the ends of the hair break they are quite nice to shave with and not scritchy at all (IMO). I highly recommend the Marvy Mug if she will be shaving in the shower. It is made of rubber and won't break it OR your tile should it drop. I started out using a plastic coffee mug and found out real quick they break just as easy as a glass mug will. The first set up I used was a gunmetal Weishi and a Dorco 301-ST blade. This gave a very mild shave and once I have my technique down, I was ready for something a little more aggressive. Short handle or long, that will be her preference. I use them both, the one thing I would recommend is some kind of texture on the handle, this prevents slippage. The razor and the blade are really unisex, think of the combos you went through in search of your preferred set-up .. hers will be the same. I don't do a pre-shave, I let my brush exfoliate my legs. Scent. As with everything else, this is a personal choice here. Does she like fruity scents, flowery, spicy, powdery or perfumey? I like to build layers of scent throughout my shaves that compliment each other and sometimes I use the same scent throughout. Let her tell you the kind of scents she likes and picking out a soap or cream, after-shave balm, after-shave milk, body lotion, etc. will be easy. For example, my first beach vacation of the year is coming up .. nothing gets me in beach-mood faster than using TSD Mango Coconut wheat SC, ASM, and cologne. It just smells like summer. Hope this helps and if there is anything I can do just let me know!
I like the Idea!! I am about to work on a old Ever-Ready. If it goes well that may go in her gift basket
Thank you, I researched the 29L. I am impressed with the long handle. She will be using this in the shower. How did you like your Pink Weishi? I have thought about that too. She has her Mother's House and mine. So I'm going to get her two sets. One for each house. As far as blade disposal I'm handy about making those out of recycled cans. I'll do some artistic touches to hers!
The Pink Weishi gave a decent shave. But it is a bit lightweight, and the handle is shorter than I like.
Great, Green Marvy Mug!! Yes she will be shaving in the shower. Her favorite scents are fruity and floral. But not like rose she thinks that is a old lady scent lol. The two razors I have been looking at are the Parker 29L and a Pink Weishi. I had a blue Lady Gillette but she is in to pink and green! Again thanks for the help!
Anytime! I will say that I had a pink weishi, it is super-light weight and has no heft to it, I ended up giving it away. They can be pricey, but you might want to opt for a pink Lady Gillette - I love mine ... because it is pink! The TSD Yin Yang is an excellent scent, lavender and citrus. The Sea Buckthorn is nice and fruity/floral without being over-powering.
Not a lady here zilla but my wife is and the advice i see here is on par with her opinions also. She goes to the boar brush more than the badger. she has a Semogue 830 that she loves. She has tried a few DE razors, shes tried my slim adjustable, futur, fatboy, but her favorite is the super adjustable. She shaves with it on 9 and has never cut herself. my wife does like creams better than soaps just because she feels it is easier to store in the shower and somewhat quicker. she starts a hand lather then moves to her legs from there. she has also noticed less itching of her legs after shaving. She uses a lavender aftershave balm with which hazel and then an olive oil lotion after that and very satisfied with it.
OK - I am not a woman either, nor do I know any that shave, let alone DE. However, based on my limited experience (and a review by a lady here - http://www.rottenotter.com/2011/03/bluebeards-revenge.html) I would recommend Bluebeards Revenge (Now Dreadnaught in the US) Shaving Cream and Aftershave Balm - I have yet to try their oil. http://www.bluebeards-revenge.co.uk/ http://www.dreadnought-shaving.com/ <- Seems to still be partially under construction. Firstly, I am a little scepticle (sp) to its claims of reducing hair growth, however I would of thought that anything that slows and thins underarm and leg hair for a lady who is trying to keep her legs as smooth as silk has to be worth a try. What I can say is that their aftershave balm (pleasant scent, gender neutral, but not overpowering) is probably the best I have ever used. It contains Aloe Vera AND Which Hazel, and has left my face feeling the softest is has been in years. I can't say much for razors or brushes - but BBR offer a pink handled badger brush with skull and crossbones logo The above linked review, quoted for the link lazy
Update to thread. I have purchased the Parker 29L for my daughter. We shopped online and that is what she picked out. Also got the Green Marvey mug! Thanks for the advise on that one Shawna! Now it is the brush and soap selections. We have decided to get a one boar and one badger so she has one of each to have. The only shaving cream she has picked out for sure for the name itself is TSD SC Monkey Farts! Could not have done it with out all the help. Thank you!!
Anytime Todd! Good to hear she is finding the tools she likes. PS - The Mango Coconut combo is a good one too!
