Hi all - Been shaving with a DE for about 4 years, using a Merkur Futur with a variety of blades and preps... then my inlaws sent a vintage Gillette for my recent birthday. Best gift I've ever gotten from them! Wouldn't have expected how well it works from its modest looks... Very mild, but gives me the closest shaves ever, with only a little irritation if I get too aggro going against the grain on my neck or jawline. Currently using Feather blades, though I tried it at first with a Wilkinson that I get at my wife's store for almost nothing, figuring it would be a throwaway shave, and maybe razor... Can anyone ID this razor? Where should I go next??? Thanks! Marc
It's the Gillette Super Speed. What is commonly referred to as a "Flare tip" Super Speed. If you look under the head you will see on either side of it a small letter and a small number stamped into it The letter corosponds to a year, and the number will tell you what quarter of the year the razor was made. Flare tips are probably the #1 recommended vintage razor for new wet shavers. They are fairly common and can be purchased cheaply, and they give a decent shave. Yours was probably made in the 60's or 70's.
Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
I'm very fond of my '57 flare tip. It belong to my Great Grandfather and is among my favorite shavers.
Thanks for the welcomes -- went back and forth this week between the flare tip and my Futur... tonight I cleaned the Futur to put it away for a while; the Gillette just gives me a much better shave... I did try the Futur on my head yesterday, which had about 5 days of growth; my first DE shave of my head. Had to finish it with a Sensor Excel, but the Futur plowed through pretty well set on 4. Cheers - Marc
Hi everybody I need a little help for recognizing my Gillette shaving set. Alluminium made handle. I think it`s Nacet or ... !? 1940... I think ? Thank`s in advance.
Very nice indeed. And what about this white plastic set? No marks, no stamps... nothing. http://theshaveden.com/forums/attachments/Снимка0042-jpg.31017/?temp_hash=596cd9ce58c1fc5bfe257038ce8880df http://theshaveden.com/forums/attac...8/?temp_hash=596cd9ce58c1fc5bfe257038ce8880df
Hi Marc well you have the correct info on your razor now. As for your question: Where should I go next? You must realize I have teminal R.A.D. and certainly don't want to infect you, but if you like the SuperSpeed, IMO I think you should be on the look out for a Gillette "Aristocrat" TTO. The "Aristocrat" TTO roughly (1934-1951) predates the SuperSpeed. To my mind its a slightly upscale "SuperSpeed". A bit beefier, gold plated, and shaves wonderfully. If you enjoy your SuperSpeed I think you'll like an "Aristocrat" at least as well, if not more. Of course I'm speaking as someone who's gone "into the light" and can't(doesn't want to) come back. So be warned !!
While it is true that there are no marks on that set, the design is as distinctive as a fingerprint. It's a Merkur razor or a copy of a Merkur razor. This razor was most likely made by Merkur for another company.
