Ok guys I have NEVER ever grown a mustache. Iv tried a few times but after about a week of trying in the midst of that awkward growth that looks like a hardcore pedo mustache I always shave it off. Anyways I plan on sticking it out through that awkward growth stage and I want to know if theres any tips on how to grow a handlebar mustache. Im talking curled up tips and everything. How and where do i trim it to achieve this look? Keeping it groomed? I want to know it all lol ! And if you have a curly handlebar.....how long did it take you in general to get that initial length to get some curl? I know everyones hair grows at different rates I'm just curious.
Steve / swarden is your man. He should be along soon. Paging swarden. Paging swarden! Please come to the Courtesy Desk.
Don't have a handle bar but I've read up on them. The key is to not trim it but, use wax to keep it in place as it grows out. Steve will know far more about it.
Lovin' ma 'bars! Don't, DO NOT, trim it. Naturally you'll go through what I called the "Geraldo" stage where it's wild and nearly unmanageable. Give it time. How long? Can't say; everyone's beard/hair/'stache grows differently. You'll definitely need to get some wax. Stay away from the Pinaud Clubman wax you see at the drugstore - too thin, very little hold. Firehouse wax, the Wacky Tacky, is most excellent and my highest recommendation. I also make my own with just bees wax and Vaseline. To use, I soften it the wax with a hair dryer, apply to my 'bars, use the dryer on my 'stache to really liquify the wax, comb it out, then shape. Also, check out The Handlebar Club for info on wax and maintaining your 'bars.
Very good to know! I am pretty excited to see what I will look like. My wife on the other hand thinks I'm going to look ridiculous but I tried telling her that may be the truth because I myself have no idea what I will look like with a handlebar. Only time will tell! I may grow out my go tee with it at first so it don't look so wonky because my wife has seen me with a go tee (just the chin growth waterer its called I'm not sure if that makes it a true go tee) but I may do that to kind of keep her at bay for a little bit til I can get some decent growth to chop it all off but my stache!
If you have or can get a stache comb use it. It will at very least help the growth from looking quiet so wild and woolly. I grow my original bar in the Nam as an act of rebellion. And trying to trim it is at least early on a big mistake let it get as long and full as you can. Mine if I just washed it and used a comb and brush to pull it straight down hung below my chin in a straight line. And as Steve said WAX, WAX and more WAX. While it is still young the Clubman will do but it really needs something more authoritative, Clubman doesn't stand up to getting wet so eating and drinking is a task. If you can find one get a mustache cup to drink everything from it helps. But most of all have fun growing it and wearing it!!! It is a good time killer, even after all the years I haven't had mine I still find myself reaching up to stroke it and twirl it. And good luck!
Just as an after thought - to you question of when can you start to make it curl almost as soon as it is no longer just peach fuzz. You start to twirl the ends into points and you can even start waxing that to really start training it. And just as an aside I found that the AR's (of my day) were a pretty good guide to how big to let it grown. As they said a stache could be worn but it was not to extend beyond the end of the mouth or extend below the upper lip. Going by that trim it at the end of your mouth from the bottom of the upper lip and it will pretty naturally shape itself and the wax will train it. But done't cut anything else (i.e. don't cut the hairs in the lip area.) Kind of look at the generals stache for the general outline just don't follow his example and trim anything inside that outline.
I already took a day 1 pic.....I plan on making a time lapse vid of all my pics at the end of the month and maybe then some
And also Swarden......where do I chop off the go tee ? At the corners of my mouth? Where does your growth stop?
I've gone moustachioed a few times. Best tip I have is grow it out with full facial hair. Full beard if at all possible. Then when the 'stache looks okay, trim everything else down. You will be looking at 3 to 4 weeks of scruffiness if you do it that way, but you won't have the pedo/gamer in the parent's basement look going on.
LMAO that is the look that always made me shave it off! I plan on growin out my go tee with it just for that purpose but I cannot do a full beard as I must at least have some good daily shave time in.....the more I have to keep smooth the better lol.
And that is probably one of the sweetest combos of a cut and stache I have ever seen...I have my hair cut into a slick back/pomp style...so I could totally do this! Im takin this pic to my barber next time I see him!
I have no idea what mine will look like...I could end up the next Mustache World Champion or I could end up like this.......
