    Hello Gents,

I'm thinking about my next razor purchase and would appreciate some feedback. I have a modest budget for my next piece and have narrowed it down to 3 tools:
    1. Muhle R101
    2. Edwin Jagger DE89
    3. Merkur 38c "Barber Pole"

Had any experiences with these pieces? Suggestions, rants, raves, cautionary tales.... pick your fave!

    Thanx

I have the EJ89L and love it its a great razor well finnished and looks stunning. i have never tried any of the others,:), Im sure there are a few people with experience of all three:) or even a couple of other Ideas in the same price bracket.

what are you using at the moment?

Right now I'm using a 1940's Schick Injector type E with bakelite handle (pictured in my avatar). It was my grandfathers from WWII. It's a trusty razor but I would like another tool or two for my arsenal and something with a little more heft and something double edged. The Schick is a great travel tool though. I would love to get a Feather but that's just not in my budget. Thanks for the feedback on the EJ.

The EJ89 is a good choice one of the best modern razors esp for the price and very popular on most shaving forums. you only have to look on ebay to see how many second hand one's there are. you do have a lot of choice in that price bracket:)

I'm definitely warming up to the EJ based on these comments. What type of blades have you guys been using with yours?

I have used Durasharp, Feather, Shark, Rapira, Personna, and a lot of others. It is a good well balanced razor which shaves really well

Voskhod's were made for the EJ, smooth as buttah.

Mühle R101 and EJ89 have the EXACT same head, so pick the best looker - in my view the Mühle :)

In regards to blade choice try a blade sampler pack, then find the best one for you, volskhod are smooth but Astra last me a few more shaves, and are nice.

+1 to Voskhods in my EJ DE86. I also do very well with Rapira and 7 O'clocks (yellow, black, blue and green).

Since you like the stiffer blade of the Injector, have you given any thought to a single edge razor? The blade is less flexible then a DE blade and cuts better for me. The Gem Micromatic (clog pruf or open comb) is a nice razor that can be found on the cheap. I haven't paid more then $15 for one and it was a minty razor in a nice bakelite case.

Out of the three you mentioned, I like the R101 the best. (IIRC it is the R41 with a white handle). I have the R41 and like using it. I get great shaves from it, but I wouldn't want it to be my only razor. Many people are using them exclusively and loving it. If it were just for an every day razor, I would try the DE89. It would provide a more comfortable shave.

This is all just my opinion, so take it for what it is worth. Really you will have to give it a try and see how it works for yourself. Everyone is different and what may be gold for me could be garbage for you.

    Ditto!
I have recently purchased the Edwin Jagger DE89, and it is an amazing tool, both in function and appearance! So far my blade of choice for the DE89 is Lord Platinum

Awesome isn't it Mitch. The finish, the balance....all of it.

I used mine for the first time in a few months and loved every second of it.

    +1 on the Voskhods.
