I've been DE shaving and making my own lather for about 15 months now. I've got RAD pretty bad, but the soap side of the disorder has not hit me. Since I'm in NJB I noticed that I'm running low of some of my "go-to" soaps. So, in August I'll need to buy replacements. Here's what I've used and my thoughts: Proraso Green - Nice lather, nice menthol, nice scent, but yawn... Stirling Glacial Obsidian - Nice licorice scent - too much menthol? Stirling Black Ice - Nice licorice scent. I can live with this much menthol. Stirling Sharp Dressed Man - Nice scent Stirling Margaritas in the Arctic - Acceptably cold, nice citrus scent. I love this stuff. Maggard London Barbershop - Nice "old time" scent, doesn't seem to provide skin protection Maggard Limes & Bergamot - Nice citrus scent, does the job. Lush D'Fluff - purchased by my wife - very, very, very, very rosy, strawberry, floral scent. Nice lather. Not one of my favorites. Did I say it had a very floral scent? I'm looking for suggestions on what to pick up next. I'd like something that is really slick and provides nice skin protection. I'm not too picky, but I do have a couple "things": No lavender - can't stand the scent. Don't really like any floral scent. No sandalwood - I going to really upset you shaving purists, but again I don't like the scent. Reasonable price - I just cant bring myself to spend $20 or up for soap. Guess I'm cheap. I've read other posts and I've seen several suggestions out there. I'm just trying to gather enough info to make a decision. Thanks in advance!
I know you have typed soap, but what about a cream? I really love the The Body Shop Maca root shaving cream?
I'd suggest perusing the soap commander site. their soaps lather so nicely and leave my skin feeling very nice. the love scent is very close to sticking your face into a bouquet of fresh cut roses. I've got a few of their products now, I'd recommend them highly.
I'd also recommend TSD, I've enjoyed everything I've got from there also. especially the accessories. the only down note(my fault not theirs) is the stick. I haven't dialed in the technique for getting the ideal( for me) lather. I'm thinking about removing the contents into a mug. I'd lose the convenience, but I think I'd have an easier time getting my preferred consistency. scents are spot on and last a good bit. menthol is the "bomb", pun intended. and I tremendously enjoy the web site.
I'd suggest you get some Arko. It's an old time favorite, it comes in either stick or puck form, it makes a great lather(at least for me) and it downright CHEAP! Oh and it definitely DOESN"T smell floral.
DeVergulde Hand L'Occitane Cade Gold Dachs Institut Karite Dr Dittmar Derby Savon du Midi Muhle VanDerHagen Luxury I have hard water and all of the soaps listed above make great lather for me (with some variation obviously). You'll have to check pricing but I'm pretty sure most are reasonable and some like Derby are very inexpensive. I would agree with some of the soaps already mentioned in this thread so I won't repeat any of those. In the DeVergulde brand they've got a couple scents and I have Extra Fris. L'Occitane Cade is pretty mild. Gold Dachs has three or four scents and I've got them all. Dr Dittmar and Institut Karite hardly have any scent. Derby smells like Arko. In the Savon du Midi I've got Vetyver scent but they have other choices. In the Muhle brand I've got Sea Buckthorn and they also have other choices. VanDerHagen is pretty mild.
Tiki bar soap. If you like any citrus scent. Plus i find it to be the best performing soap out there. Mikes natural soap. Great soaps at good prices.
Hahaha sorry. But honestly my first suggestion, The body shop maca root is very good. I can honestly recommend it to anyone. Newbie and oldie in wetshaving
Since you have Stirling and Maggard's: WSP Rustic Shaving Soap Reef Point Catie's Bubbles RazoRock Classic Creams: TOBS, La Toja, Proraso Blue, Speick
Cyril R Salter is very nice. I've only had a sample of it. but it was very nice. I've got no clue about the cost, yet anyway. I'm gonna try Mike's all natural, also.
