I'll keep that in mind! I shipped an OS mug & brush, two pounds of Skittles candy (for his daughter), and a couple chunks of Cypress wood for brush handle crafting. We both spent around $50 to ship what we traded. It was worth it! Tapatalk via LG
@RyX what did you do to get banned from B&B? I do have an account there but it's new like this one here.
For similar reasons to RyX I'm also a B&B refugee They complained that I posted a link to an ongoing auction so I politely corrected them pointing out that the link was to a completed one. The process, and the tone of the mod who I interacted with, left a bad taste in my mouth so when I, again politely, asked to be removed from their membership they banned me. It's a shame because they have some very knowledgeable members and good data that is only spoiled by the attitude of quite a few of their mods. I don't think it's absolutely necessary to scrub your cookies, but if you don't then the website may prompt you to log in (with your old user name) on occasion. @Lord Gillette Have you considered an adjustable? Gillette 195 Fat Boys, Slims and Black Beauties are widely available and you can get a very good one in the $20-$50 range. If you look at B&B's blade gap chart you can adjust a Fatboy from about an .022" blade gap all the way to a .045" blade gap. Personally I really like the heft of a Fatboy (my '58 version is 78g versus my '55 Flare Tip at 58g and my Red Tip at 64g), and it gives me great shaves at a setting on 7. Trying out various settings on an adjustable might give you a baseline to look for, or reject, other Gillette offerings.
Patience and be willing to dig through hundreds of listings using generic keywords like Gillette safety razor of vintage razor also add the word lot into the search term.
My standard response to the adjustable suggestion is that it's better to learn basic shaving skills on a fixed head razor. Adjustability adds a complication that beginners don't benefit from, I think it actually hinders progress.
As far as the cookie thing if you are using windows crap cleaner or bleachbit is a good program to clean up cookies, internet cache files which can take up gigs of space depending your settings and other stuff that slows down a machine over time.
You may well be right. Like probably most people here I have all sorts or razors, some adjustable, some not and I don't find that I have to adjust my technique when using either. There again I've been wet shaving for very many years.
A Member was asking questions about a particular Patchouli scented shave soap. The Cranky Retired Navy Mod told him to forget about that soap because only hippies use Patchouli. I chimed in and suggested the Member ought to buy the soap, and if he didn't like it he could throw it at a hippy. I've been a fan of Patchouli for decades. I go not warning, discussion, or appeal to Higher Authorities - straight to banned. I know Moderators are People too being one myself now. I don't argue opinions with folks. I might discuss facts. It's a different business model over there. Their bills are paid by advertising and Sponsors. No dissing the hand that feeds them. TSD is a privately held organization supported by the owner purse, and occasional raffles. We here to talk about Wet Shaving in all it's Glory with no restrictions about the companies paying the light bill. Agreed. Fiddling the adjustment would make for problems to a Newbie. If the New Shaver were to set it and forget it and learn to use it correctly, later they might adjust and learn how to use it at the different setting. I did that with my 195. Started at #5 and kept it there for months. Later bumped to #7, and now it's pegged at #9 and never changes.
i like the tsd the way it is and try to donate/enter raffles from time to time.not a corporate guy..not one to take orders either..pound sand is a common response when warranted..
Wow....you hit the jackpot for getting some great advice. I agree with those saying, to stay with one fixed head razor to get your chops together first. But then...when I first rediscovered this TWS shaving hobby, I copped a Gillette Slim, and learned to get great shaves on every setting. That in itself taught me a ton about Shavology! The lowest settings were the hardest. After that, I could get a great shave with just about any well made, quality razor. Then I got into Injectors and SEs and gave away all my Gillettes but my Birth Year. Swing by the Injector and SE Party thread...There is a ton of great razor porn over there about another whole genre of original safety razors...You may see something that sparks your interest. Wish I had kept my Senator...that was the only DE I had that could shave aswell as some of these SEs...Of course YMMV!! LOL! Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
No idea who that navy mod is. But I've been de shaving for a year or so. But recently I became interested in vintage Gillette. I think my technique is pretty ok.
I’m a big fan of three piece razors and my favorite is the Old Type. I like the head of the ball end and I also like the single ring. I’ve tried the NEW, both long and short comb. For some reason they both bite. I’ve tried the New Improved and like it a lot as well. But the Old Type is the King. For me at least.
Yes indeed. It took a while to find one intact. I have a second one with a different handle. It shaves just as well. I love the head geometry. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
There are. Gillette Aristocrat has an open comb version. Not sure if anyone else has recommended it already but you should check out Mr. Razor's website. He's created the quintessential Gillette razor history in pictures of any I've seen. It is in chronological order and you can see the progression of design. Here's the link to the razor portion of the site. http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Gillette Rasierer.htm
