Okay guys and gals. I have an ever ready 200T that I finally got the nerve to take the knot out of (I know there is a bit more of the knot to remove around the edges). This is my first restoration I have undertaken. I am a bit perplexed by the shelf. As you may be able to tell I have hit some plastic underneath. I am not sure if it is hollow beneath that. Should I keep drilling it out. The shelf does not look like it would be deep enough to seat a knot properly. Please advise if you have any insight for me. Thanks 20130911_193040.jpg 20130911_181115.jpg

If a friend of yours doesn't have a lathe then:
With a Dremel and a round bit "destroy" that black "mud" and the new knot will "seat" better
Wear glove in the hand that you keep the handle
Don't use too many rpm cause the nose of the Dremel can get around and hurt your finger and the handle.

I've done several of those and yes, it is hollow. The shelf isn't real thick, I've left it in for a couple restores and removed it for others depending on how deep I wanted to set the knot. On the 300PBT and 500PBT that I recently did I left the shelves in and was able to remove enough with a Dremel to set the 18mm knots I used.

The collar that is inside that handle will also come out as you can see this thread.
