How different is a Fat Boy from a Slim?

Is there any difference in the way a Fat Boy shaves from a Slim. They seem to be very similar razor so I was just wondering. I am not a collector of razors, I am strictly a user of razors, so would I be duplicating my efforts to buy a Fat Boy when I already have a Slim?

 

Slimmer longer handle. My preference is the fatboy but I like the slim as well. The shave for me is about the same. They are adjustable so that helps. I like the fatter handle on the fatboy and LIke the balance of the slim. Plus dad shaved with a slim so there is that.

 

I have, use and enjoy both the Fat Boy and the Slim. They are similar in weight with the FB being slightly heavier. The Slim I think is a better balanced razor. However, the main difference is that the FB has a larger head is harder to maneuver, especially under the nose. I use both on setting 5 and get a great shave from both. I collect Gillette's and that is the main reason I have both. If I had to choose one, it would be the Slim. One additional comment, the Slim is somewhat cheaper than the FB as it was in production longer and there are more available

 

I typically switch between a Tech and a Slim, and one of the only things I don't like about the Slim is that the head is thicker than the Tech, so it is harder to shave under my nose. That being said, a Fat Boy would be even harder.

 

ARGH is correct. The Slim has a longer handle. Do you prefer a longer handle or a shorter fatter handle? I really like my 53 super speed. It has a short thin handle. Having said that I like the adjustment opportunity. If you like your adjustable on say 5 you can get close with the fatboy on 6. (One full notch more open). This is due to blade gap and handle length fulcrum arm length. If you would like both I honestly think you will enjoy them both for different reasons. It's like a dodge magnum, a charger and a challenger. They are all good cars. You might like one over another but if you like one why not get them all? $100 should set you up with a fat and a few super speeds.

 

I've used both Fat Boy and Slim, both are great razors, I prefer the Slim, Brother likes and now owns my FB

 

I haven't noticed a difference in the shaves and they are both fine shavers. Unfortunately, I don't get on with any of the Gillette TTOs.

 

Very similar shaves. If you can't afford a fatboy, get a slim. They are both great razors.

UPDATED: The Fatboy's handle is .062" larger in diameter than the Slim (or the Slim is .062" slimmer than the Fatboy). That is about 1/16". The Slim's is about 0.11" longer than the Fatboy. That is about 1/8".

 

Yes I would agree with that. However, the FB is a great razor too........

 

The perfect TTO for me would be the weight/thickness of the Fatboy handle - but the length of the Slim

I, too, would've appreciated a taller 195…or Fatter Slim.

 

Resale is pretty good in both. Pick up one of each and try them. Sell the one you like least. I ended up keeping two fatboys and a slim when I was shopping them.

 

Aside from the physical differences, I found that a fat boy is a better shave. I really don't like my slim. Of course, YMMV.

 

Perhaps a 4 inch handle is what you are looking for.

 

I have a very nice slim. They are cheaper than FBs on ebay, despite the many here who have encouraged me to continue my search for a FB. I keep losing my bids. I'll try one more time on a 1962 model (the year I graduated from high school) and if I lose this one too, I'll hang it up.

I love the Slim, BTW, and find it a more capable razor than my Super Speed. I usually use BOTH razors in a shaving episode, first with the SS, then following up with a second and third pass with the Slim. Agree with others on the balance of the Slim, and prefer its handle to the SS.

 

I've used all three Gillette adjustables (FB, Slim and both long and short handled Super Adjustable aka Black Beauty), and I've found all three heads give similar shaves.
Although my preferred razor, if I could only choose one out of those 3, would be the FB, as I like shorter BullDog type handles. That said if you want an adjustable ANY of them would be a good choice. While they certainly all shave well, none of the models IMO is vastly superior to the other as far as shave quality goes.
My preferred daily use razor FYI, is either a Weber DLC, Gillette Fat Handle Tech or Gillette "NEW" LC/OC with a Griest shaving brass "FAT" Handle.

 

I have yet to use my FB, it is awaiting replating. I have however used a Black Beauty and Slim and prefer the Slim by a long-shot.

 

I've read all posts up to this point of the members that have tried both and interestingly the votes are 4- Fat Boy / 3- Slim. I guess this sort of proves that razors are truly a YMMV item. By the way, I voted Slim..............
