Gentlemen! I wish to gather your opinions on the height to secure my stop. I'm thinking about waist high, but thought I would check with others before I make a potential mistake. Also, the securing device is in question. I envision a wood screw based hook hopefully with some swivel o-ring or D-ring. Surely Home Depot or Ace Hardware would have a usable fixture to screw into a cabinet. Any helpful hints will truly be appreciated. Regards,
I really truly believe that the strop should be at an angle (maybe 20-30 degrees)... Either higher or lower than the holding hand I don't think makes a difference... But in my mind you should either be stropping up to or down to the hook... Why??? I believe (absolutely no proof) it helps you realize less pressure on the edge when stropping...
Thank you sir! Your opinion based on empirical evidence and coupled with your knowledge and experience is worthy of note! I shall do just that! I will place the fastener so that my first stroke (away from me) will be slightly downhill.
I 100% agree with Glen. Stropping at an angle helps me apply less pressure on the razor during the stropping process. I strop down towards the hooked end.
I guess I don't know the answer to your question, but I like to hang my latigo leather and linen strops about waist high so that I am stropping at an angle I hang Mr. Jimbo the benevolent's Roo strop almost chest-high though, and I really like how lightly I can strop against it that way. There may be some personal preference that is a factor, since it will be your personal experience that helps you determine how you get your best results You can find examples in old barber manuals occasionally too. Since you mentioned securing your strop, and D-rings, I assume you are talking about a hanging strop I hold my paddle strops at a slight angle as well when using them, but like Glen said I think the point is that you are able to easily use a light stroke
My hanging strop is set at waist height and I use it dead level. I hold the paddle strop at a 30 degree angle downward from handle to tip. goshawk
I saw a stropping video of a guy once (LXemergency I think, from SRP) and I swear he had that thing attached at around forehead height and was stropping almost vertically - quite quickly too I might add. I think, as has already been mentioned, that personal preference comes into it a bit. But in all honesty, the height at which I hang my strops depends entirely on where attachment points are in my bathroom. Most of the time I tie off on a towel rack, which is usually breast height or lower. I have never made a custom attachment point to suit my stropping preference, I always just adjust my stropping to suit the point of attachment. James.
