Hi, How many times a razor blade should be used for shaving?(considering it's used once in 3 days) Thanks. edited..
Depends on the brand, toughness of your beard, how many passes, etc. Most brands, probably at least 2 shaves, some maybe 5. If you only shave every 3rd day, maybe fewer shaves, since you're cutting a heavier beard each time. I usually count on getting 3 shaves with a DE blade, 5 with a SE, 7 with an injector, but I'm shaving every day.
No, not really. It depends on the blade. For example, I've had this Astra Superior platinum in my Futur about 11 days ago and have shaved with it at least 5 times with one or shaves being a two day beard. This morning I used it and it finally starting feeling its age towards the end of the shave. You should be able to get at least three good shaves out of a blade. The only way to really find out is by shaving with your blades and judging for yourself.
Use the following blades: DE - Gillette O'Clock SharpEdge (the yellow box) get 14 shaves SE - Ted Pella GEM with PTFE coating get 7 shaves Injector - Ted Pella PTFE coating get 7 shaves I have tried others like the Derby Xtra DE and get at best 5 shaves, GEM blades from CVS get only 4 shaves and for injectors have also tried the Schick from CVS and get only 4 shaves. I will say the three blades I use also give me great shaves. The Derby blades though were my go to for quite awhile and will provide some great shaves. You might also consider the Super Iridium DE blades but I found them not to be as durable as the Gillettes. Almost forgot to mention that I hand strop the DE & SE blades on the heal of my hand after every shave. This seems to help extend the life of the blade.
There is no set answer. Change your blade when it's not as comfortable as you want it to be. After awhile you will be able to predict when it's time.
14 shaves per blade? That's got to be the most extreme example of YMMV I've yet encountered. The 7 O'Clock Yellows didn't work well for me at all, very rough, but I did manage to push them to 3 shaves each as I worked my way through the sample box. Palm stropping didn't help. But if something works for you, then that's all that matters.
Nick nailed it. And I agree with ThePossum that hand stropping will extend the life of the blade for a couple of shaves. For me that's about two or three. There may be more life I could get out of a blade by hand stropping, but I always put a fresh blade in for Monday's shave. I'd rather be short getting one good shave than over-use a blade and get one bad shave. By the way, for me 1 shave = 3 passes.
My take on Razor's and Blades I'm new to the DE way of shaving and find it a nice relaxing way to start my A type day! I have purchased a couple of razors that are ok but, my new 2 razors after 4 months of this venture are the Merkur Slant and a 1961 Gillette Fat Boy off ebay in very fine condition for $40. I have a tough beard. The Fat Boy actually is a better razor (for me) due to the fact you can dial it up or down (1-9) depending on what part of terrain your mowing ! Now, I realize this board is for BLADES so here"s my take. I started with Shark super chromes and was not overly impressed so, I purchased a sample kit from West Coast Shaving (great people and helpful). So here's my take at this point, In the plus category in order of liking. Derby extra platinum, Feather Hi stainless, Merkur super, Dosco stainless platinum. In the never use again Gillette 7 o'clock (meat cleavers) Gillette super thins , Sharp super chrome. I still have left to use, Lords platinum, Personna stainless, Astra platinum, Bic chromes, Narcet plats, Iridiom stainless, and Sharp stainless. I'll keep you posted on how they work for my face. It's kind of fun shaving again!!
This should be good to see everyones input on this .... But i usually get 4 out of a blade .. could probably get more but usually cant wait to try out a new blade in the sampler
palm or blade stropping definitely helps especially if you HAVE TO use a feather like me and aernt your favorites..I found out a few days ago I can get 3 4-5 pass shave sessions with my Israeli Personna (Israeli brand) and am actually loving them ALOT than my 4 other brands I am just using to say hey "I tried em n didn't like em much"
Do you guys find that you get different blade life from razor to razor? I use CVS Personnas. With my Merkur Classic and Gillette NEW, I get about 3 shaves. And even the 3rd is just a little rough. But with the Gillette Super Adjustable I recently picked up, I'm coming up on my 5th shave without any roughness at all.
