    Hello,

How often do you typically strop your straight razor? Do you do it before or after you shave or both? Do you ever do it while shaving? How many passes do you typically do on the strop?

I don't strop after but it isn't a bad idea to do about 10 Linen after drying and cleaning your razor to make sure the edge is clean and clear..

Some people do Strop between the passes, I tried it for about a year but never realized any real difference so I stopped

    Same as Glen (25/50, approximately).
I used to strop on linen post-shave to dry the edge but now use a few blasts from a hair dryer — more convenient and faster.

I am pretty new but, I do 25/50 Linen/Leather before shaving. Refreshed with chromium oxide crayon for the first time 2 shaves ago. 10 passes on linen with chromium oxide then regular 25/50.

I strop 20 on linen or webbing and then 40-50 on leather before the shave. After I shave I strop 10/10 on linen then leather to make sure the edge is dry and clean.

I strop both before and after the shave, on the rare occasions I use a straight razor.

As others, 25/50 before I shave.

This is my routine as well. Seems to keep the edges in very good shape.

50 on the ruff leather side and 25 on the smooth leather. 10 laps on the linnen after the shave.was told to use the ruff side by an old barber.that was the old school method.i actually notice a difference in the edge.

After and before every shave, just part of my routine. 40 laps after, linen and leather - 40 laps before, linen and leather.

When I had my beard, I only found I needed to strop my Wosty every three days or so. There just wasn't that much I was shaving at the time and it was capable of going that long without any tugging. Now that I'm back to shaving my whole face, I'm back to my routine of 60 laps on the smooth leather before every shave. I only have one strop with a decent linen, and I've never found I had much use for it personally. I do have a pasted balsa strop I use periodically.

Sorry. A newbie in this world. What is this 25/50?

I know I need a strop. What kind should I get? What is chromium oxide?

25 passes on linen, 50 on leather

Chromium oxide is one of the gritty compounds that can be added to a strop to make it more effective.

For a starter strop, it is hard to beat the Poor Man's Stop from Whipped Dog. It is the cheapest decent quality strop I've found anywhere.
