    Hey guys and gals ...

I have a question .... When setting up a DE how tight do you twist it in? When I twist it in tight the blade is flat against the razor and no room to shave ...

Do I need some kind of spacer?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas !

I twist the handle until it is tight with the head. You should not need a spacer or shim. What type of razor do you have, and are you sure that the baseplate is right side up?

I'm not certain from the angle of the picture, but it looks like you have the baseplate upside down. Common mistake

Tighten it too tight and the threads will begin to strip = a loose razor head, not fixable.
Soft metals cannot withstand the torque, especially the thin threads found on either the stem or baseplate.

Interesting question on how tight to screw on the handle. Looks like for brass, 25 inch/pounds is a far as you want to go on a #10-32 screw. Couldn't find numbers for zinc but I'm sure it's less. Using just your thumb and forefinger to tighten the handle should keep you from getting it on too tight.

The scallops on the bar should be facing upwards. Other than that gently snugging the head to handle is all that is needed at least on a 3 piece razor. On Gillette Adjustables an extra 1/4 turn is used after the snugging to keep the TTO doors from loosening during your shave. Hope this helps. :)

I just snug the handle slightly.
But I load blades differently than I used to.

I put the blade on the top cap, put the base plate down on the blade
and press down firmly on the ends before threading on the handle.
When the handle contacts the base, I just give a mild snug.
No stress on the threads, and I don't cut myself anymore either.

Reverse the base plate and don't tighten it too much. relax and shave.
