I already have a Merkur 38C closed combed. Should I buy a EJ DE89L or go for the open comb Joris which is around $166. I mean it has some great reviews and I have very good technique as well as soaps to make lather.

So basically what I am trying to decide is should I get another closed comb razor DE89L and also an open comb Joris or should I just skip the DE89L because it is similar to the Merkur 38C?

Any feedback in deciding would be great.

PS. If you guys have not tried a soap, try Godrej from India. You won't regret it.

I think the EJ is milder than the Merkur so I wouldn't bother with it. The Italian made razor, FATIP , has the identical head of the Joris but not as polished , its not $166 either.

If you want a little more variety in the shave then to me an open comb like the modestly priced Cadet or Fatip might be the right step , they are a bit more aggressive to shave with and differ from the straight bar.

To me a straight bar, open comb and slant razor and you've covered DE variety .

First, welcome to the Den. Be sure to sign up for our August Newbie Give-Away.

Never tried the Joris so I can't speak for how well it's put together or how it shaves. I do know that it's too rich for my pockets. Unless you absolutely must have a brand-spankin'-new razor, I'd put a request in our WANT TO BUY forum and/or search the web for a vintage at a quarter the cost.

So what you are saying is that Joris is a bit overpriced and I should go with Cadet or Fatip razor and skip the DE89L?

What specific open comb models should I consider within Cadet and Fatip? There are too many.

For me it's overpriced. I would not even begin to presume what you or others consider "too expensive." That's none of my business.

Since every razor is different and every person is different, what I, or others suggest, may or may not work for you. I would start with the one that you like the looks of. Otherwise you'll always be second guessing yourself with, "Man, I should have gotten that ____. It was just so dang good looking."

Hi, I just called Fendrihan and the associate said it is best to find something of less price but same shaving head as joris.

Can anyone recommend cheaper open comb razor? Just in case I don't like open comb I would not ave spent much so I'd rather go with a cheaper open comb. Also the associate said that you are paying for a brand name and it is from France.

So is there any other open comb you recommend which has outstanding reviews?

Do you like your Merkur 38C? If so, why not Merkur 1904, Merkur 15C?

38C is ok but I was looking for an exprience with a open comb razor. I see the Merkur 15C is open comb but the reviews aren't that great. I just wanted something as good as the Joris open comb but not hefty in price.

So far I see Fatip with decent reviews. Any suggestions?

Others that have Tradere, Fatip and Joris all open comb say Joris wins. Is it that good? If yes, I would drop $166 and order it. I have excellent technique and have fallen in love with shaving. I use to shave with cartiridges Mach 3. Oh boy what a waste of money. I think this is how all males should shave.

Oh one more concern. Do these chrome and gold finishes get rusty and start coming off. I only found one post for joris and the person stated "besides the rusting issue joris...."

I just want to confirm. If this thing rusts it ain't worth spending $166.

    Stop thinking , start shopping!:)

    1. Cadet Robusto OC 24.99
    2. Fatip Grande OC Gold 36.99
    3. Merkur 37c Slant Bar 43.99
    4. If you insist on spending 166.00 on a razor instead of the Joris , it should be the Cobra Classic razor from Classic Shaving. It would be a different experience from the DE razor that Joris is.

Hi, Hanzo thank you for the list of choices. I will definitely pickup a fatip.

I also like the reviews on the Merkur 37C, but is the 39C the samething razor but with a longer handle? Which one do you suggest if this is the case 37c or 39c?

I wont speak for Hanzo, but for me, I prefer the larger handle of the 39c. same head on both. If you like the 38c, you'll love the 39c.

Thanks Kevin. I think I am going to give 37c a shot. I don't really use 38c long handle as much as I thought I would. I read the shorter handle could offer more maneuverability, but I think overall 37c and 39c have great review.

I also added a fatip grande gold in my shopping cart. Just about to order. trying to apply a freeshipping code :)

You cant go wrong with either of the merkurs; 37c may be just what you're looking for. The fatip grande is a real nice looking OC razor too!
    Have fun!

So I have added these to my cart. At first I had the Merkur R41 replaced with Muhle R89 Grande, but then I though I already have a 38C and they are similar. What do you think? Is Merkur R41 a better choice than getting another closed comb razor such (R89)?
    1. fatip grande gold
    2. Merkur 37c Slant bar
    3. Merkur R41 open comb

Part of the fun of this hobby is getting to use the razor that catches your eye. Fatips are good razors but proved to be a bit too aggressive for me. Slant bars are their own thing, as is the r41.

Have you tried a Gillette NEW? They're worth checking out and they are a lot more cost efficient than a Joris. Likewise, have you dismissed trying a Cadet? I see that you were worried about rust issues, but if the razor's under $30 it can't be that big a worry. So try out some of the less expensive open combs, esp. vintage Gillette NEWs. I think you'll find them worth the time.

When I used the Merkur open comb years ago, it was so mild as to be useless. I think Noob Shaver has a good point about the Cadet OC, its really a great shaver, it is a tad milder than the Fatip. The Fatip is on the more aggressive side of OC's, the shaves could be a little less refined. I found that the vintage Gillette New and the Cadet OC were really similar in shaving.

Think about a Cadet first, Slant as second, Fatip third.

Hi, can someone send me a link to the Cadet is it a excalibur? Also the Gillette New. I am unable to find it.

Gillette NEWs are vintage and you can find them on ebay.
